That isn't even half true, the majority of applications will still work. Apple may not be big into backwards compatibility, but they don't change things that much every time.
I don't agree. The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality works well with many things, but from a security standpoint OS upgrades do help quite a bit. I do, however, strongly agree with the recommendation to not be an "early adopter". Wait a couple years for everyone else to find the bugs before upgrading. Usually by service pack 1 the next version of Windows is ready to go. Macintosh has a similar logic to it, so at least waiting a yearish from launch helps greatly.
Windows XP was horrendously insecure and unreliable when Microsoft first released it. It took until service pack 2 for the OS to become stable tho from a security standpoint it's still not hard to compromise compared to 7 and 8.
Hopefully evil art nazi had a backup of the painter installation media. You can always reinstall the older OS if needed. Never forget to backup backup backup! Backblaze.com is great in that for $5 a month your entire computer will be backedup with no storage limit. Just an idea.
Haven't had problems around here, everyone I know who installed it is having no trouble. However, no one I know has Painter. Perhaps they'll update it?

Also, never install an Apple OS. Because screw Apple :V
