You'd definitely get people commissioning you.

Don't take to much on at first though, increasing your workload with commissions is a sure way of making money. But you risk losing your love of drawing with the added pressure.

If you do this you should only take 1 or 2 at first and make it clear that these are your first and will be done in your own time and way. You'll be working with a strange breed of furry, "commissioners" can be annoying, demanding, relentless and prone to changes of heart about what they asked for.

It's not all bad though, some are amazing...like me

I can only thank you tons for taking the time to write this sweet advice!
I was thinking maybe opening up for two first then later batches of three maybe, that way I think that no one will be forgotten and I can deliver work promptly and filled with enthuiasm. I hear that the worst part about commissioning someone is the waiting and I want to be able to give them the work within a couple of weeks not months but I also want the work not to be rushed and thus look crappy.
This is why I'm doing the free commissions, so I can see how I work with other people characters, what I'll need to know and how long I'll take.

That seems very sane, plus it gives people that normally can't afford to get art commissioned the chance to get very high quality work. Don't get snowed under with free commissions though, maybe ease into full price one's when these are done?
Clear these up first and offer cheap commissions, but only one at a time. That should give you practice at all aspects of it. 2 or three cheap ones and you should have everything worked out.

A good idea is to get everything hammered out before hand, get them to send you a full description with links to refs if available. Then make a rule that no major changes can be made once you accept the details. I've heard of a few commissioners changing their minds every few days, must be a nightmare.

I don't mind waiting a while for quality, i've commissioned a few times now and only a couple have taken more than a month or two. I've been lucky.

I think I'd just leave it at the two free commissions, that's let me get a taste for things, I would never ever except requests because I know bad things happen then, I admit I'm planning fanart for people but I feel like that's for my pleasure. I'm trying not to take on too much because I'm the sort of person who can't say no and hates turning people away. Which is like a major concern for me when taking commissions because I'm a push over and always want to do everything for everyone.

Process wise I would send them a copy of the sketch, allow them to suggest any changes they require, within reason... I was thinking that 50% of the price would be sent to me then, I'd show them the lineart then the flats, as long as they want to see them that is, and when its completed the rest of the money owed can be sent. I thought that would be the best way to keep trust between both sides, I'd hate to take all the money incase something untoward happens and as I'm a really new artist I need to build a good reputation and prove that I'm not just going to run off with the cash.

I know what you mean about saying no to people as well, all i do is colour pictures. But i get asked every so often to colour a sketch or lineart for somebody, i've not turned anybody down yet but one day i'll have to. I have to see potential in the picture or i can't get motivated with it.

For $40 it would get you an image like this http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1782075/, only with one character, the painterly backgrounds don't take too much work so I wouldn't charge extra for them (they take like 15 minutes), any background you fancy as long as it's not too complex and detailed.
When I've been sending out the kiriban ones I've sent a huge high rez version and then a decent sized one of the size I would post on my own gallery.
Time scale work, up to two weeks I think would be a safe statement, though I'd probably be able to get it to you sooner but I'll aire on the side of caution.
Also I'd like lots of information off to work from, I'm really keen to get feedback from the commissioner to avoid any awkwardness, I think maybe  kepora can vouch for this. XD

I’m quite surprised looking at you price list, with the high quality of your art and the work you put into each piece I’d say that you are under charging by a large margin.

Its funny the whole pricing thing as art is so subjective and you have to find a balance between time and what people are willing to pay, though I feel lucky at the moment because the pound isn't so strong against the dollar so I don't have to bump my prices up to cut a profit. I'll admit I have raised a couple of my prices since this journal, but nothing major.
