There's Something Wrong With Modern Society
12 years ago
antisocial [ANN-tee-So-shul or ANN-tie-So-shul] n. wanting no involvement or association with society and/or other people for the sake and/or reason of detesting it and/or them.
That may not be completely accurate, but, if you define antisocial as that, then I fit that definition almost exactly.
Yep, I hate modern society, partly because my mind was generated in the mid-1970s, where people weren't such complete morons.
Now, yes, I know the 1970s weren't exactly the greatest years of the 20th Century (ask me about Kent State, Vietnam, stagflation, the Watergate scandal, and all the oil embargoes and stock market crashes if you want to know more), and I'm not going to pretend that they are. If I'm really honest, no decade is without flaws, and anyone who denies that should probably see a proctologist.
That's not the point, though. The point is that the society of 40 years ago was clearly not as stupid as the society of today. Rather than make a long, boring essay about everything specifically wrong with today's society, I'm just going to touch on a few points that make today's society a total joke in the form of subheadings.
1. Racist Idiocy
Undoubtedly, racism has been a tremendous issue for a very long time. Probably the most notable of these times was when Martin Luther King spoke out against racism in 1963. However, the topic of racism still is persistent in today's society. Why do I say this? Well, allow me to provide a little anecdote.
I currently attend high school. I get to school every morning by taking a school bus, since my house is about 2 miles away from my school. I'm not afraid to tell you that I pretty much live in a ghetto. Most of the kids that ride my bus and live in my area are African Americans. They're not the nice ones that are polite and don't like their stereotype; they're all the stereotypical black kids who like to blast shitty rap, hip-hop, and R&B music from their iPods, sag their pants like they don't know how to dress themselves, and call each other and other people "niggers," even if the people they refer to aren't dark skinned. However, if any other race calls them "niggers," especially if a white person says it to them, then they get all up in arms and call them racists.
What makes this so ironic is that these kids themselves are completely racist. Their belief is that if a black person calls another black person "nigger," then that's fine, but if anyone else does the same, then they're automatically racist. I.e., it's only racist if a non-black person calls a black person "nigger." What kind of racist logic is this?
As if that wasn't bad enough, they also make a huge deal over how you say "nigger." If you say it like "nigga," then that's okay, but if you say it like "nigger," that's not okay. Why should it matter? They're both the same word, so, either way, you're still making the same pejorative insult to everyone else if you use either pronunciation.
It seems like these people don't even know what that word means. For those who don't know, here's the definition:
nigger [NIG-ur or NIG-uh] n. a pejorative term for a person with dark skin. <from Spanish negro "black">
I.e., if you call someone a nigger, you're insulting them for the color of their own skin. Every time you say this word and intend to use it, Martin Luther King does a trapeze act in his grave.
I don't want to hear comments like, "Wow, GMart5, you're such a racist." I myself am against racism, and I only intend to use the term for the purpose of shaming people who actively use it. I have never called anyone a nigger in my life because I feel it is one of the ugliest words you can ever say, and so I believe that anyone who uses it intentionally is a racist.
While I'm on the subject, what's with this idea that all white people should be shamed for being white? Sure, there are still some racist white people on this planet, like how there are racists in every race, but this isn't the 1950s; racist white people seem to be a minority now that we're starting to look down on this type of behavior. Leave the white people alone. Sure, they've done bad things to people in the past, but the same is true for every other race out there. Just keep that in mind.
I would talk about BET, but I think I've rambled on about racism enough. If you want my thoughts on BET, I feel it's one of the most racist things on television that is marketed towards black people, since it basically implies that all black people listen to rap, hip-hop, and R&B, thus perpetuating a needless stereotype. If that can stay on air for 33 years and counting, they would probably be able to get away with making WET (White Entertainment Television), where its programming features nothing but things related to hipsters.
I'll end this topic with this: You know things are bad when it's seen as not racist when a black person dresses in whiteface and mocks white culture.
2. Everyone Wants to Be a Gangster
This trend seems to be a huge thing with teenagers these days. We're currently in a generation where everyone thinks they can make it as a gangster. This seems to be evident when people brag about why it's cool to sag pants, why it's fun to shoot things, and why whatever minor crime they commit makes them a gangster.
I hate to burst your bubble (well, not really; I actually have been wanting to since this trend started), but if you told a real gangster that you're a gangster because you sag your pants, know how to shoot things, and brag about how you jaywalked and stole a candy bar, the real gangster would laugh in your face before shooting it.
Being a gangster is a lot more than just whatever you hear in any mainstream rap or hip-hop song. In fact, it's a lot riskier than that. Ever seen The Godfather? How about A Clockwork Orange? Those movies are perfect examples of how real gangsters operate and do their business. If you decide that you want to be a gangster, you take the following risks, among others:
1. You could any day be killed by rival gangsters.
2. You could spend the rest of your life rotting behind bars for being a gangster.
3. You could any day learn that your whole family has been killed by gangsters.
4. You could any day lose everything that you have.
5. You can never leave the gang unless you die.
Still want to be a gangster? If so, then what are you still doing in school or at work? If you're a gangster, your whole life is devoted to your fellow gangsters. Your family, friends, and past life don't mean anything when you're a gangster.
Still want to be a gangster? Fine. Whatever. Go ahead and be one. Just don't be surprised if you end up with a bullet in your back someday and you end up being maggot food.
There are more problems with society that need to be addressed, but I think these two are enough. These problems are the ones I run into constantly, online and offline. If you disagree with me or have other things to say to me, I can't stop you. Likewise, you can't stop me from telling you why I detest modern society. Thanks for reading this vicious tirade, and have a good day.
