Foam - Game Development Update
Test Header!
I am currently sitting in my hotel with a old netbook (with a tiny screen) as the floors in my house are being replaced due to water damage. Because I have nothing better to do (other than college work and sleeping / eating) I am writing code.
Foam was 90% coded on GM8 but due to my need to be slightly professional and the fact that I needed something slightly faster, more flexible, and more portable across operating systems, I have started to code it from scratch in Java.
I am currently using Eclipse IDE configured for Java 1.6, the reason I'm not using 1.7 is due to compatibility issues with older systems especially Apple's Macintosh OS's. It's not that hard for me to switch but so far it doesn't give any performance improvements only security and language feature related improvements... So I will stick to 1.6 for now.
The skeleton of the game written so far runs well on Linux (Tested on Ubuntu and Mint), Windows (XP, Vista, 7), and OS X. That's the super obvious hint that it will be made to run on all of those OS's. It will be using LWJGL with Slick (the same libraries that Minecraft uses). I will be taking advantage of OpenGL and OpenAL.
I am not really suppose to say anything on the graphics front of the game but FallenArts is also working on something new and improved. It will add a lot of flexibility to the games graphics which should complement the change over from GM to Java.
So yes that's the good news, bad news will be this is going to take a while being that I'm in college so split time.
PS: I did consider C# and even messed around with it but I really prefer the open source stuff I'm using now.

FA+

dude
this is radical beyond belief
AWESOMENESS IS COMING IN A NEW AND DIFFERENT AND FRESH FORM sorry for caps
but really though ouch floor replacements, I would sincerely hope that that doesn't have to come out of your pocket but considering circumstances I will have to realistically believe not until proven otherwise
on the other hand, hooray for this having given you just that little bit of extra free time, especially when a bout of boredom can trigger something like this
and to think I still have that baby version of the game from before, but as I seen myslef from your last stream, things are shaping up to be monumentous in proportion .w.
All hopes and support through wireless transmission goes to you ^w^, and this seems like it will turn out fantastic
It has been fun coding on a 1024 by 600 screen, can only see a few lines at a time with the class navigator, console, and file viewer open. (tunnel vision) XD. I hope it wont disappoint as doing the same thing in the game now takes a lot more planning and effort than it did before, code complexity has increased significantly.
I assume us switching to java and allowing more than Windows OS is somewhat of a benefit for you? At-least I hope so, one of the other reasons is that most of the other stuff in the game is developed on a Mac and since it wouldn't run on Mac is was a bit annoying because you couldn't test anything.
Maybe we should fall back to flash and call it a day :P jk!
also don't worry about that, take your time, and take breaks where you can ^^, it won't be good for you if you outright rush
also the multiple OS'es thing is great for a wide variety of people, although I myself am on windows
