Part 36 - Forgotten Fight pt. 2
As soon as the soldier in front of Khoya was clear of the doors, he growled and launched himself forward. He kicked off from the edge of the Humvee and landed about 10 ft. from it. The snow on his bare paws was cold; enough to send a shock wave to his head, chilling him. He quickly took in the battle in front of him. They were being dropped off on a high, wooded hill over looking a valley. The FARF compost in the basin was alive with furs running along the catwalks and bright with gunfire. Humans were swarming the adjacent hill, clearly visible in their black uniforms.
Astros came up beside Khoya and took in the sight as well. "Christ..." he said.
Khoya looked at him and said, "There is no Christ here today. Let's go," and he took off at a jog, the fox tailing him closely. As they approached the bottom of the snowy slope, he crouched low and stalked the trees, taking in all the other fur''s locations around him. He raised his gun to his shoulder and knelled behind a fallen tree, blown up at the trunk; probably a grenade. He was peering down his sights and saw Astos' barrel match his.
"What now?" the fox asked, his voice clearly giving away his nervousness.
"Listen to your radio, we're on the the east side of the complex. We need to hear the orders and calls from base.: Khoya glanced over to Astros, seeing 2 more furs beside him. 'Four...' he thought. 'Good.'
The radio chatter was muffled from the echos of gunfire, and most of the news was from the north-side. Then it came through, "All units notice, heavy enemy movement on the south-east quadrant. Stand firm and fire on sight."
Khoya shifted and looked down his sights. "That's us boys," the others switched their safeties off and aimed into the trees. Off in the distance they saw the humans diving and ducking through cover, shooting towards them but hitting trees and snow. Astros returned fire and Khoya slapped his gun down. "Not yet, or you'll run out of ammo before even getting a shot."
The fox took his claw off the trigger and held the gun low.
"I'll tell you when..." Khoya growled. They grew closer, almost 200 yards away, 150... 100... Their fire was more concentrated and was striking trees near them. "Ready... NOW!" He yelled, The three other furs opened fire, bursting and spraying down range. Khoya fired single rounds, aiming carefully. His first few shots missed, unable to find anywhere but a tree. Then on struck it's spot. A man on the other end of his sights screamed, dropped his sub machine gun and clutched his arm, falling to the ground. Only after a seconds hesitation Khoya fired again, silencing the man and bringing him to the ground.
Khoya's hear stopped and held his breath. Time slowed and he looked over his sights. The man lay in the snow, motionless. 'This is for you Enyo....' Khoya flipped his rifle to fully automatic and stood, the fox looked at him confused but didn't question him. He too rose and together, they fired magazine after magazine into the oncoming enemy force. And one by one they fell, joining the motionless dead.
By the time the last of them fell, Khoya could barely hear. He turned to the fox and nodded, sitting back behind the tree. Astros joining him. They checked and found they each had two clips left, just a little more than the two beside them. They listened to the privates radio, waiting for another call for their front, but none came.
They sat in the snow for a long while, the ringing of gunfire sounding around them. Khoya motioned for the other three to follow him, and they weaved their way to the complex, A few firefights were taking place around the edge of it, but they stayed low and entered the building. They found the lieutenant from their Humvee standing in the entrance.
"Reporting from the south-east section, threat neutralized." Khoya said.
"Good job, wait here with me for further orders," he replied.
Khoya turned to Astros, "Told ya we'd make it," and he leaned against the wall, sliding down to sit against it. Resting his gun in his lap, he sighted and closed his eyes, the sound of warfare about him. 'Enyo, it's all for you.'
