Devastated

Tonight I got a call from Sciggles. Emergency. Our storage unit? People were throwing everything it away. Apparently, when we signed up for our storage unit the leasing office failed to put it under our name. The listing was still under a previous tenant's name -- a tenant who was evicted.
So they cleaned it out. Threw everything away. Printers, laptops, art, sketchbooks, collectables, convention stuff... about 3/4ths of our shit in storage is gone. Irreplaceable stuff. Gone. By the time we found what was going on most of our stuff was in a trash compacter.
Definitely NOT a good day. If Sciggles hadn't have been walking Odin and happened to come across them unloading it... everything would be gone. Across the board.
What a nightmare.
Already called out of work tomorrow because I have to go fight this, and figure out what the hell we're going to do. It's unpleasant. I know when it comes down to it's just material things, but we lost an incredible amount of stuff that just can not be replaced.

Sorry to hear that happened to you bud :/
Sadly pictures/photos/data is thing whos usually lost forever... , items of sentimental value can never be retrieved
Holy shit I've dealt with some bad companies in the past. They've admitted wrong doing, but suddenly, when other people/forces get involved "Oh, do you have that in writing", or "Prove the allegations".
I'm really sorry this has happened to you guys.
You are not being a p***k for getting a lawyer, but all too soon mistake-makers move from being apologetic to be aggressively hostile to the just demands that they take responsibility for having made the "mistake".
Needless to say, I feel for you buddy, hang in there.
You rather should get what they have destroyed for you can use that as evidence for the insurance claim...
Ne'er have I seen... well, I have seen such senseless idiocy many times in my life, but for crying out loud..
Keep strong, my friend :c
Horrific mistakes like this need to be brought to justice swiftly and severely. Yes, it's just 'stuff'. But damnit, it was YOUR stuff, not theirs >:U
Best of luck!
*hugs*
Ouch. No good! D:
Since they do admit fault they'd better be willing to pay.
Sorry this happened to you dude. That's a total piece of crap.
I hope it'll work out somehow.
And I though I had a bad day... hoping you win that fight!! Good luck! :(
To Dragoneer: I feel very sorry for you and i wish you the best of lucks on having a compensation, even tought it can't bring those things that has a sentimental value for you. Hundreds hugs to you and your dear wife.
.... really sucks to hear about this.
but this is really a nightmare on a Nightmare St.
I really hope that can get resolved properly, but I can only imagine how much of a low-blow that is,
and you simply just can't get that stuff back.
Not cool at all. >:L
I'm sure you want to do what's right for both parties, but I can assure you if you don't bring someone else in, you're not going to get what it's worth in the end. If you want a place to start, start by looking up the price of replacing the stuff you can like printers and laptops, try and put together the price of the art and what you purchased it for. The price of materials for the art you made, but more than that the time you put into it. That's worth something as well.
Even if you don't get a lawyer, bring someone who is a third party who can think clearly through this. I really don't want you taken advantage of because you're trying to be a nice guy and not fully understanding the value that it's worth to you.
I hope everything works out in you and your lady's favor ;---;
I'm just hoping that our apartment's management company makes things right.
i feel it.
I don't hold out much hope for the electronics or larger things, but you might be able to save some of the books and other stuff.
All my well wishes to you. I hope something is done about it for compensation.
*hugs you both*
I have to wonder if my mom is to blame for all of it, because I sure as heck know I didn't throw any of it out. I also had
an old wooden chest full of memories that I had been saving. I came back one day and found the whole thing empty, and
my mom gave me the line "but there wasn't anything in there~" BS. I was ever-so pissed. Even nowadays, my mom
tries to get me to "willingly" part with my stuff. When I say no to giving away my plushies to my nieces, when they come
and visit, she says to them "aren't these cute? Wouldn't it be niiiice if somebody GAVE them to you?" *Not-so-subtle*
=__=# It's crud like that, that makes me never throw anything away.
Never forgave her for that.
But, as a side note, becuase they failed to inform you (misinformation or not involved) and threw out and destoryed your stuff anyways, pretty sure you can sue them out the ass and then some
They made an error. Accepted money from you for the unit, allowed you access to the unit and placed items in it. In a court case, they judge will rule in your favor. If I were the storage company, I'd be bending over backwards to avoid a lawsuit.
Call your lawyer asap. Get some legal advice. I understand wanting to give them a chance to recompense and not wanting to come off as hostile, but still. Getting legal advice could save you *a lot* of heartache down the road. You don't need to bring a lawyer with you to the meeting with your landlord tomorrow if you really feel uncomfortable about that, but talk to a lawyer beforehand.
If nothing else, and note that I am not a lawyer and this constitutes a recommendation and not legal advice - Do NOT sign anything at all without having a lawyer look over it with a fine tooth comb. Please. Promise us that.
i dont know what the laws are in your state, but here in Canada they would by law have to replace all of it, and if it can't be replaced a "personal value" in money would have to be paid to you in a case like this wehere they were at fault and did not properly check into this.
I would never trust a storage unit for anything. things are known to go missing from these shady privately-owned places.
I used to collect lots of things when I was little.
My uncle got me into collecting whatever I liked.
Pokemon, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Cards were a majority.
Rest of it was Digimon and Pookemon collectible figures.
Lost EVERYTHING in there and never saw it again.
sometimes lost things feel like losing a loved one because we attach so much to them.
I'm really sorry.
i hope you guys get some sort of compensation for this... :/

I'm also going to echo what others have said. Get a lawyer, now. (Well, in the morning.)
Today you talked to people. After that, they likely called their bosses and their insurance people. THAT is who you will be dealing with tomorrow, even if it's through the people you talked to today. They won't have the option of being nice, they'll have to do and say what they've been told to do and say. This is no different than getting screwed over by an insurance company in a car accident. It doesn't matter if the other driver feels bad, the insurance company WILL try to pay off as little as possible, if anything.
They've violated SEVERAL laws with this, including destruction of property, failure to properly dispose of electronics, privacy violations, and a slew of other potential charges. In short, whomever authorized the disposal of your property will likely have either no job left, or be in deeper shit than anyone could ever imagine.
Sorry things went so bad for you guys today. At least you retrieved and are still retrieving things from the wreckage. And at least on the more plus, you have more, and promising stuff to look forward too in the future, bud.
I'm sorry to hear that this happened to both of you. I hope the person responsible for the mistake will pay dearly. >=(
Just dun let it all get you down and at least you two still have some of it left. That is more then other people could say when this happened to them. <=)
id take them for all they got D: *huggles*
*Hugs* good luck and you better get those idiots
Wish you the best of lucks and hope you can at least get some reparations and stuff.
I would probably shoot someone.
Seriously. Anything at all.
My condolences
Can you not sue for negligence on their part?
Anyhow, awful situation; here's hoping you can at least manage to receive monetary compensation for your losses, without too much hassle.
Damn that really is bad, sorry to hear that happened, I will support you in trying to rectify this situation*hugs*.
Sorry to hear about such incompetence on their part, the commercial damages, and emotional injuries inflicted upon you and yours.
You have always had my full support and if there is anything I can do to assist; please inform me.
In my opinion; there should be an immediate cease and desist order as well as an order to search and retrieve any property that can be salvaged back out of the compactor.
In fact, if this truly was their error, they should be making every effort within their power to make you whole again without need for an order.
Including but not limited to a complete search and rescue of all your property from their compactor, at their own expense, including inventory and replacement of all property damaged by the compactor at their own expense.
As well as full compensation for your own time; based on what your time is worth for such stressful activities including services you are providing to them for dealing with their legal negligence.
And only YOU are authorized to determine what your time is worth including all time you spent creating and originating the properties such as art which has now been lost or damaged by them.
Through their negligence, of their own leasing office, they have incompetently entered into a legal contract, with you, without full knowledge of the monetary value of you, your services, your original issue creations and your time.
As well as those of all other parties involved and their original issue creations.
If it was me, in a similar situation, I would be accounting for ALL of it at a lawful money value of at least one 25 Dollar United States Gold Eagle (.5 OZ gold) per hour as well as per original issue creation.
And I would originate a signed and sealed under penalty of perjury CLAIM against their bond (insurance) attesting to the many damages and injuries they caused as well as my compensation for my time which, for these types of legal services, is worth at least what any high end attorney might charge for his time.
These things take do time to evaluate and I would not settle or sign anything until my evaluation is thoroughly completed.
I would not settle quickly on this just because of my reactive need to immediately solve their problem and get on with my life.
I would take much time to consider what has happened, calculate the true value of it, maybe hire legal counsel, and etcetera before I settle because the monetary value of their negligent incompetence, my services, and my original issue creations, may be far greater than a mere 13K. . .
What would an insurance adjuster do if I merely reject his initial settlement offers and inform him that I am still evaluating and calculating the "true bill" for the damages?
This is not legal advice.
Merely my opinion or what I might, personally, do in a similar situation.
Kindest regards;
Your contract law dragon.

How could they just throw it away?
I have been around a long time and lived many lives.
During which I have witnessed the following-
Quantity 11 brand new, Toyota, 4X4 pick-up trucks sent to the crusher for complete destruction because their roofs where slightly damaged, during shipping, on the rail cars.
It was called an "insurance write off". The dealer couldn't sell the vehicles as new so they just wrote them off and made an insurance claim.
I was working at a wrecking yard at the time and I witnessed all 11 trucks go through a car crusher just like this one-
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12122512/
At which point the insurance company documented their destruction, took lots of pictures, and went on their merry way. . .
Then there was the steel recycling company where I was unloading a bunch of scrap just in time to watch an entire 40 foot trailer load of laboratory equipment go directly into the shredder.
This included such things as microscopes, oscilloscopes, miscellaneous test equipment, centrifuges, hand tools, power tools, CCTV equipment including cameras, controllers, and monitors and lots of other equipment I was not familiar with. . .
The presumption is that a hospital or college lab shut down or replaced their equipment with all new stuff. . .
So, yeah, there is no reasoning with dead entities such as mindless corporations or even people who believe they are a corporation called a PERSON, legal persona, or Juristic Person.
There probably is a policy in place, at Dragoneer's apartment company, that says something to extent of:
"For safety and liability reasons; all abandoned property is to be destroyed or disposed of properly. And employees, or other tenants, are not allowed to expose themselves to said property or walk off with it."
BUT; the property was not actually abandoned was it?
This appears to be a mere clerical error that resulted in serious damages and commercial injuries against one of my most favourite dragons. . .
This is what happens.
People act in the capacity of a non-living legal entity (PERSON) then it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to get such a limited liability, corporation, dead-person-zombie to be responsible for his own actions. . .
And if they are aware of these facts, the nature of these legal entities, and speak honestly; they would tell you to your face: "Don't blame me; my juristic person did it!".
(no personal responsibility, honor, or even a consciousness.)
*shrugs*
