I'd have to say the friends are terrible and they should leave that which is not theirs to mess around with alone. Especially being something that can't be replaced.

I'm with you on this. If it's something that can't be replaced avoiding damage or change to it is the smart thing to do.

in this case not so much because they're furry but because it's a mutual friend and they think I'm being silly for not letting him use it.

It is and should be up to the person who owns it. Obviously if said item's reconstruction could do something amazing such as provide limitless clean energy or solve world hunger than theres a bigger picture to consider ;P
But if its 'just for fun' than its entirely up to you whether the risk is worth the potential reward than the 'friends' should whine a little and move on. Sounds like basic peer pressure to me XP
