It boggles the mind...

So I was browsing through the news on Google (about Prop 8 specifically) and found a particular article that I read. Well as I was going through the reader comments for this article, I saw that someone who was using an argument quite similar to my own mentality concerning the issue listed a number of countries that recognize same-sex marriage on some level. Lo and behold, as I went through this list, I saw Mexico... and my brain instantly exploded. (check here if you don't believe me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_.....ions_in_Mexico ) I mean, Mexico? REALLY!?! A third world developing country is more progressive than USA? Mexico had fucking youth riots and lynchings against Emos for a perceived connection to homosexuality less than a year ago, and now they have civil unions in certain areas!? How is this possible... most of Mexico is Catholic! Pretty soon, Americans will be illegally crossing the Rio Grande in search of better opportunities in Mexico.
I am stunned by this... what happened to my country? It used to be known as a shining beacon of progressive ideas and innovation, but now it's like a gramophone in a world of digital media...

I mean, you're right, Mexico IS Catholic, I just can't imagine a majority in Mexico being cool with this, far less, electing officials who are... and, besides, we would've heard about this by now, if it's been going on for a year. I find the metaphor at the end a BIT harsh... we still have more rights than most... China, UK, Russia, for example.
