What exactly is Patreon all about?
I've noticed a lot of artists on here mentioning that they've created Patreon accounts. From what I understand, it's essentially a website that allows people to donate money to help fund your artwork/projects. It sounds like a pretty cool idea, but I haven't really looked into it beyond what I've read on a few artists' pages... so I have a few questions for anyone who has used it.
Is it effective? How is it any different from posting a Paypal donation link on your userpage? Does Patreon charge fees and/or take a cut from donations? :0 Are there any tricks to using it? Anything to watch out for or be careful of? I'm considering creating my own account to try it out, but it'd be really helpful if I can get some general opinions from the artist community beforehand. Since I'm planning to doodle up several pages worth of yiff comics in the near future, a method for receiving donations would really give me some incentive to focus on the comic instead of taking a bunch of commissions.

When you use Paypal donations it's unstable, your supporters will decide when and how much they want to give you, may also be none if they didn't like it.
Patreons are like your "official shareholders" who support you by pledging a certain amount for a project you work on, you put down a table rule and people will sign up with names, they become honorable mentions etc. Rules like "I'm working on this adult comic, here are some samples (post pages), if you would like to see it continued, pledge 1$/page, 5$, 10$, 15$ and up, the more your supporters pledge for each progress, you'll have to give them gradual privileges (WIP, sketches, or a high prize of including their character)." And then after you getting a couple of long term donors, it's work as it is, some artists get 1100$ per episode of animation for instance, so more donations faster, they produce the art quicker. It's very stressful and since they're official you're pledged to each other.
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation!
Yeah, it's made for artists (or what ever, project maker) who're moving on to being a full-time audience-paid professional. It'll take lots of effort and time, so I guess doing commissions or taking donations would be a happy medium for now. Also it requires organizing your subscribers, privileges, and hold up a certain quality. But once you have the time and work for it, it's gonna be hella honor and fulfilling for ya I hope!! Good luck!
