I've got to say, the less human a character appeared, the more interesting their backstories were. Even Yondue was more interesting than Batista, Starlard, and the Green Giantess combined.
I wouldn't FULLY agree, but Yondue was actually pretty interesting of a character, and I would LOVE to know where he got that fancy "Whistle-on-Command" arrow dart thing :)
Both Drax and Gahmora I can understand, more on Gahmora though because her reasons were not that well strong to make her that likable as a bad gal turned good because she's been faking all this time kind of person (though I still loved her action sequences and Zoe Saldana). Drax; I get why some people disliked him or found him more of a joke, and I'll admit that having a wrestler other than the Rock playing in a superhero movie got me nervous. But I came around knowing most of Drax's backstory already in understanding his moods and emotions, and...well; he was an easy target to play joke off of with his "people" apparently a literary species (no clue if that's true in the comics).
Peter Quill (Quinn?)...I loved him. But...not as much as I love Rocket >^__^<
Well, given that we are furries, of course we would be more interested in Rocket and even Groot more so than any of the other human like ones. But when you look into the backstories of the main 5, Groot and Rockets are the least "cliche" Batista's acting wasn't that bad either, in fact all the acting wasn't bad, well... except for maybe Gamorra's sister (But she was a henchwoman alien robot thing so I can understand why they didn't develop her character much), maybe the real issue here is the writing behind them?
Well the thing about the backstory part...I'm actually fine with the lack of one (for now). We got as much as we needed for now for Quill (Quinn?) with his current personality dealing with life in the galaxy for a Terra, and wrapping up the main emotional plot between him and his mother by the end and his attachments. We didn't need to know too much about Drax's past right now besides his need to avenge his mother and daughter. The film did a great job "showing" not "telling" most of Rockets past with the de-lousing scene and bar scene. And Groot...yeah, not very necessary for a backstory; Groot is just Groot?
I do agree that Gahmora and Nebula should have had a bit more of a backstory in THIS movie since its mostly her trying to escaping Thanos and regain her life, though the events of this movie goes by so fast that we don't get a better opportunity to delve into her motives other than a brief "telling" of Thanos killing her family and enslaving her to be a weapon. Probably should have add a bit more to the rivalry between Gahmora and Nebula other than the quips Nebula makes...but I suppose the creators were banking on fans to have read the PRELUDE TO THE MOVIE comics that came out before the movie (which does have a bit of a prologue for Nebula and Gahmora...more on Nebula though).
However; I'm fine with the lack of backstory for the first movie because their backstory shouldn't be the biggest focus, and it worked for the most part. If anything, future installments will start to expand on each characters history a little more (Eventually there will be a backstory showing of the murder of Drax's family and probably on Gahmora and Nebula's relationship). They showed what they needed to show for now.
But that's just this cat's opinion >^__^<
*patent pending...I'm going to be using that quote for future vlogs, LOL*
In the comic Drax is, or was, a human who was killed, alongside his wife and child, when Thanks first arrived on earth. Then, his soul was ressurected in a body designed to kill Thanks.
It feels like they can't decide on Rockets Origen in the cinematic universe...
