New Journal: To Cook With, Or Without The Recipe?
~Remember~
before submitting a dish please read our club rules and TOS on the main page From Chris -
who now helps mod this cooking group...
First, I'd like to apologize ahead of time if this journal is going to cause any of the usual drama that us furries are known to do at any given time....and, I'd like to point out this journal isnt meant to point fingers at anyone in particular either!
I also want to say this: I will fully admit that -I- am not one to do cooking by the book entirely either. More often than not, as I have mentioned, I have skipped steps (to my chagrin) or maybe I've added other things that the recipe itself did not call for.
But I would ALSO like to point out - this is FACCC, and right at the front of our page it says:
"We're here to encourage people to share their favorite recipes and try new ones. There are lots of fantastic cooks out there, and many of us are tired of cooking the same things over and over- always our own recipes. The hope is that we can form a sort of exchange here, and help bring the furry community closer through the art of cooking."
This is not JUST about taking a shot of your dish and just posting it, as is.
Whats more, there IS a reason why you see those dishes that we post/get from you, our chefs, marked as 'tutorials'.
YOUR cooking IS NOT JUST an idea...a whim...something that says "hey Im bored, I'll just post this pic of scrambled eggs that looks like the silhouette of Abe Lincoln and maybe I'll get a fave or two..."... :P
YOUR COOKING IS, HOWEVER, an inspiration! (Even if you might not think it is, I might add!)
This is why we post it here WITH that recipe that belongs with it, so that way folks will TRY it !!!
And yeah, ok. maybe there ARE folks out there who might NOT like the food pictured (heck, we've just did a "Food Critic" journal on that, so enough said there)....
Maybe they might NOT try the dish...
But MAYBE...
JUST MAYBE, MIND YOU...
Maybe they WILL - and if that IS the case...
Well then, it isnt all that much to ask for the effort on YOUR part, to include the recipe, now is it?
Thats all I ask, is just, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR RECIPE, WITH YOUR DISH!
*hugs*

Also, sometimes when I'm in a rush I'll bake from cake mixes and add stuff to it, instead of baking from scratch.
If you were told you needed a lobster roe risotto for the special, you just made it, there's no recipe. So on that level, it's hard to supply a recipe with a picture sometimes as there isn't one, and you have to write it. Writing a recipe can be exceedingly hard, because it's very difficult to put it in writing so that others may understand it and do exactly what you did. Some of the best chefs write really shitty cook books for that reason.
My argument to that would be: So if you HAVE that list, do you expect the average fur who looks to our page for inspiration, to ... guess ?
If that is what the pro chef is doing, fine, but, not all of us happen to be pros :B
Just sayin' !
Engineers tend to think in exactly the same sort of paradigms as those professional chefs: "Use AGC feedback compensation to ensure linear output." That's all they'd need to see, and you'd have a finished sub-component ready to add to the circuit. But when it comes time to describe that system function for someone who's never seen it before, but will have to maintain it out in the big "sandbox in the East", they're going to need a LOT more words to describe what that thing is doing, how it does it, why they need it, and how to fix it when it quits or needs adjusting.
Bottom line, a LOT of pros couldn't write down how they do what they do - they just do it. It's a bit of a special talent to make the process understandable to those without all the professional knowledge to draw from.
You can be inspired by a picture and a simple description without the exact recipe to duplicate it.
My 2 cents !
In any event, the recipes for wuff's "kitchen experiments" tend to go through several phases. First is the "scribble down ideas"; that's mostly just "blue skying" and writing snips of inspiration from online stuff. The crudest concepts for something to cook. This might be something like "Take my 'summer berry' pie, make it with peaches, and pour it over a vanilla whipped, custard-y base in a cookie crust. Would 'supreme' layer work? What other sort of crusts?"
Then comes the "ingredients and techniques" outline. This is the bare bones, and it's what wuff' uses to jog his memory as he's actually working in the kitchen. It tends to get "manipulated" a lot as wuff is doing the actual cooking; getting changes to amounts, new ingredients, substitutions, etc., as the aromas, textures, etc., of the real time cooking affect Vargr's original concepts.
Then comes the "refining", where Vargr captures those kitchen notes, combines them with the ingredients and techniques outline, and writes it all up in a finished recipe. That gets combined with the photo snaps, and up on FA it goes!
(PS: Wuff is actually working on the 2-layer peach pie idea. Watch for the recipe to come!)
I could see you making a serious cook book one day, no joke!
Vargr could title it, "A Wolf In The Kitchen. Recipes to feed the beast in you!" *grins*
Could have chapters for "Carnivores", "Herbivores", and "Omnivores". Plus one for "Those who subsist on rainbows and sugar-fluff" or something like it, for the desserts and sweets.
Wuff could even "enlist" the help from fellow chefs and cooks here on FACCC, and feature some of their recipes (with their permission, of course!). And support some of the artists here by commissioning illustrations and chapter header-plates.
Recipes running the gamut of "Cubs at cooking", to the "Alpha Chef", and everything in between. Maybe even a chapter for "Going Wild", and cooking out doors using campfires and such.
Do an "Authors' pages" in the back, to give a little bit of info on each furson who contributed recipes or art.
And if wuff sells it, contribute the profits to charity or charities with some sort of "furry aspect".
Of course, that would be a substantial undertaking. And wuff would certainly need help along the way. Wouldn't happen quickly, but it COULD be done!
Hmmmm..... *pondering wuffy*
Plus we live in an age where no recipe is more than a Google search away so unless viewers are actually becoming offended by not having a recipe then I don't see why one should be needed with a submission.
On a side note the ALL CAPS could be toned down quite a bit, it gives off a bad vibe.
*coughs*
I know, just trying to get my point across, sheesh !
