A picture's worth a thousand words
They say a picture's worth a thousand words.
As a writer, this brings up some philosophical questions for me. Of course, so does changing a flat tire. But the question remains—how does a picture compare with a written account? I'm curious.
So what if somebody were to pair a picture with a thousand-word vignette?
That's what the Moment in Time project is all about. (Cue PowerPoint presentation.) Artists—and recipients of art—collaborating with writers to create a view of the subject from both angles. Got a new piece of art, something that tells a story? Work with a Moment in Time writer to actually get that story told, in exactly one thousand words.
At the moment, of course, the only writer actually involved in the project is me, since I just came up with it. And since the idea is still in development, the work will be free. But hey, who knows—it might just get off the ground. If this seems like an interesting idea, pull out some art and join the movement. Spread it around, get more people with art to hop on. Writers, feel free to pick this up too. It'll be fun.

The expression "Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words" appears in a 1911 newspaper article quoting newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane discussing journalism and publicity. As a writer, this brings up some philosophical questions for me. A vignette is a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about a character, idea, setting, or object.
Don't ask me what "trenchant" means, I have no idea. That's what the Moment in Time project is all about. (Cue PowerPoint presentation.) 1000: n. An arbitrary number that seemed like a good idea at the time.At the moment, of course, the only writer actually involved in the project is me, since I just came up with it.
