I asked my primary doctor about it first. She referred me to the OBGYN department (I go to the everett clinic) I got an appointment to meet with a doctor there. He's been great - I think I was lucky. He did ask me if I was sure, but when I explained that I was, there was absolutely no questioning my decision or trying to change my mind. Again, I know that isn't everyone's experience and I was really nervous going in and am really greatful this doctor has been so awesome.

He let me know my options, including more long lasting non-permanent things just in case I thought I might change my mind (like the implant and IUD). The first thing we considered was the ESSURE procedure but after an allergy test I was allergic to nickel so that was out, and we decided on the procedure I am now getting.

So yeah, my experience has been good. Asking your primary care physician is a good idea, they can probably refer you to the right people to talk to to get it done! Good luck!

Congratulations!! Was it very difficult? I've heard soooooo many horror stories over the years about combative doctors refusing to sterilize uterus-having folk (even when they meet stuff like "already has kids, is 30/nearly 30" which are often the 'gates' other doctors claim for when they will).

I was REALLY LUCKY because my doctors have been AWESOME about it and haven't tried to question my decision or change my mind. I was really scared going in but have been so grateful for how smooth the process has been. X_X I realize I'm lucky as hell for that.

Also if anything it's sad that you HAVE to feel lucky, y'know? I've been hearing more and more stories like yours (and even some from people who seem surprised it is an issue?) so the tides may well be changing. :)

The biggest problem is the fact that the primary major hospital where I'm at is a Catholic run one and they apparently don't do that sort of thing. The smaller clinics that are associated with that hospital will do things like Essure but I don't think I want to go that route for a couple reasons. Mostly it's the chance of error and I've been hearing some sketchy stuff about Essure here recently but that may just be rumor.

Haha I'm surprised I haven't heard of getting one's tubes tied as 'getting spayed' before. Hope you have an easy recovery!

I'd really like to have that done as well (especially since I'm neutrois), I might just have to steal your doctor in the future for a moment... I'm in the Pacific Northwest as well, heheh. If you don't mind, did you find out whether there would be side-effects? (such as needing to take some kinda hormone afterwards, going through early menopause, or facial hair growth or anything like that?)

Getting spayed, or ones tubes "tied", means all hormones are still being produced, and supplied to ones body still, she just won't have a way for her eggs to get to her uterus anymore.
I think what you are thinking of is a hysterectomy, which when done as a complete procedure, can remove the uterus, and ovaries.

yup! and hysterectomies often leave the ovaries for the hormonal stuff :3

Oh wow, please let us know how it goes! This is something that I've been interested in, but as others have said it's such a hard topic to breach with people, let alone doctors. My mother even went so far as to demand I give her some of my eggs -.- I would really like to hear from a first hand experience of the procedure and recovery.

Good luck! I'd probably have gone the IUD route (surgeries = generally unlucky = ugggggh), but if you're sure then it's probably a great procedure to have! If you don't mind me asking: is it a pretty invasive thing, or is it a pretty easy one with little tiny boo-boos instead of big ones? ;u;
