Stay Dead Review.
First of all, holy hell that was one long, tiring night.
But back to the beginning. Me and my brother, a radio DJ for (top secret)... Yeah, He's weird like that, not wanting anyone to know where he works. Now, back on track! Me and my bro went to this event. I had the foresight to read up on the rules. He needed me to give him a review ala pre-test cramming style before we left.
When we got there we ran into a newbie like ourselves. A medic who'd been invited into one of the veteran groups known as 'Red Team'. He would have joined us if he never found that group before starting... But sadly, they were very distinctly armed. XD
Next we ran into a few other vets, who offered us a spot with them. I could never remember there names, but as one had an axe and the other was a medic... Well, they shall be known as Axeman and Medic from now on. After registration, contraband checks, waiver signing, and the whole bit we found ourselves a picnic table for ourselves and chatted. Next to say hello to us was a tall soldier in real life. Once more, horrible with names. After a little while we invited him into our group. After that, it seemed like that was the opening of the floodgates. Two more dudes dressed like gangsters approached. One with unique goggles, and the other with a death facemask... That looked remotely like a zombie. We soon let Goggles and Zombie Dude into the group. Last to round out our posse, was a gentleman in a torn up tux, but a dashingly clean Top Hat... You know by now what I called him, with such simplistic nicknames.
We talked with a small mother/daughter group as well, though they were smoking right there in the staging area, so we kept our group apart from theirs. (Smokes were clearly labelled as 'contraband')
As a way to keep our group together, we came up with 'Alpha Delta'. One person calls alpha, the other calls Delta. That way we knew we were in the same group. It also became our official group name later on.
~Quick recap~
Alpha Delta:
Axeman
Medic
Rat (Me)
DJ (Brother)
Goggles
Zombie Dude
Army Dude (Dagger Bro, later)
Top Hat
At 6:50, all the groups were split into two sides Edmonton Survivors, and Calgary survivors. The beginning of the story was our two groups were converging on the part of the Red Deer area for supplies. We flipped a coin to see where each city started. Our city, Calgary, lost the flip and were given the fort...
Needless to say with a loud go, all of the groups wedged into Calgary rushed through the mesh, into the trenches, and into the fort. At which point our group met up, and broke off. Opting to scavenge through the course, looking for food, water, and weapons.
To keep my weapon hidden, I kept my jacket open, and held my arm close to my chest as if I was injured. Dagger and hand were both covered. This gave me a supposed way to surprise attack as well.
Two hours later, and we hadn't found too much. Plenty of water, no weapons, and I think one can of food. There was a few bogus items as well. Through the muddy window of a car, I thought I saw an ammo crate. Turned out to be an HP printer. We left that sitting on the hood (big mistake). The other item was a quarter full jug of anti-freeze. We'd run into a few NPC's, some of which were holed up in a moving truck calling it 'The Workshop'. We thought they'd want to trade it for food/weapons... Later on an NPC asked about that, and confiscated it. Slight chance of mistaking it for water, and taking a swig after all.
During that time I scored three zombie kills, one of which was a really close call. After all, he lunged and I caught the blade of my dagger against his throat, with the tip digging into his chin. After asking if I was bitten, the Zombie gave it to me, with the promise of getting me next time...
After that, the excitement for me died down a bit. Lots of sneaking from one place to the next. Running into large and medium groups claiming zombies spotted, the rare bandit raid, UN weapon raids, Snipers, and only finding water. At about 9:30-10:00, we decided that groups of two or less were fair game, as we really needed to arm ourselves.
We'd circled around to the fort for our second time, when our first opportunity arose. We were camping a corner tower, spotting flashlights closing in. We warned Axeman and Medic of a group of two from the side entrance. Axeman hid, and Medic greeted them. Two quick chops to the head, and we found water, food, a brick, and a dagger. That army guy we invited into our group? Well, he claimed the dagger, thus becoming 'Dagger Bro'. Anyway, we looted them, and sent them packing... Good thing too, because ten-ish seconds later a large group of eight came through the front entrance.
Next big event for us was a bandit pair rushing our position. At least we thought they were bandits. Running, coloured flashlights, and whooping were the correct signs. Group hightailed it, I dove behind a wrecked car. Bandits ran passed, and I thought I was safe until two lights focused on me. A cautious duo were keeping a somewhat safe distance. They thought I was injured, falling for the ruse, and ignored me.
They were kind, and so was I. So I set off trying to find my group...
Found them outside the fort, and we decided to circle around towards the corner of the course with two small houses.
There we ran into a group of equal size already in one of the houses, Rebel Scum. After Medic had a discussion with their leader, it was decided that we would camp one house and watch one side. They would do the same with the other. We'd both be watching the woods as well. After ten minutes of rest, we got our first bad news of the night. A 'No Duff' was called, pausing the game.
Soon after a referee came to our home. With weapons scarcer in this game then in others, apparently, some people had gotten creative. One person had ripped the chrome flashing of a car wheel well off, and was using that as a weapon. Another had ripped a 2x4 off of a cargo palette... Was looking to see if any group could identify them. Sadly we couldn't.
Soon after we moved out. The idea being to go to an NPC we ran into early on in the game. Rebel Scum decided to join us. Overall it was a fruitless trip, so we claimed two small shacks beside the downed helicopter. I believe that's when the second 'No Duff' was called. Hung out a bit, and another Referee came around.
Asked about the 2x4 and the chrome siding. But this time there was someone throwing a printer about. Once again, we hadn't a clue about who was doing what.
Game was resumed, and we continued to camp out until a large commotion. Apparently there was a group of two bandits camping the back of a truck. One with an auto-rifle, the other with a sniper rifle. Top Hat decided to go help the assault on them, with brick duct taped to hand.
Never saw him in-game after that...
Not much later, and a third No Duff was called. Before the game resumed, a mass recall was blared over the speakers to the starting area...
To sum things up, some people were padding down the female zombies far too thoroughly for loot, bordering into sexual assault. 2x4 Guy was still running loose. Someone had snuck pot into the game, and was smoking that. And yet another zombie claimed to have been hit by a police baton/flashlight. He was being checked for a concussion.
In-game, and real life cash bounties were offered, but I don't know if anyone actually cashed it in.
Axeman decided to call it quits there. With all the no duffs, and now the mass recall the setting was ruined... Which I have to agree with. As he was Medics ride, Medic had to quit as well.
Thanks to Rebel Scum for offering to merge groups after that, then the game resumed a few minutes afterwards. We were just deciding on a game plan, and possibly a new name when a zombie horde was spotted behind us, and coming in fast. We hightailed it out of there, and into the hay-bail field... After which, I may have done something stupid. Looking back I only saw two zombies still following, so I ducked behind cover and waited for them to pass.
DJ saw this, and watched as the rest of the hoard crawled out and warned me (a few times)... Finally took the hint, checked the other side of my cover, and hightailed it. DJ in all of his wisdom, watched me. Letting a Rager into closing distance. Bit in the arm, and a second bit him in the chest finishing him off.
I walked up, and nice as ya please tap both zombies in the head. Looted DJ, and tapped him in the head before the full two minutes it takes to turn are up. By then a third zombie joined in, and a fourth was close. I ran before those two knew I wasn't infected.
Walked a bit, then found a member of Rebel Scum. We joined the rest of the group soon after. Told them about DJ, and we decided to go to Red House. Red team's two story farm house. Took a rest break, spoke to one team there... Who saw Top Hat walking around with another group after the recall. Thus cementing DJ as our first official KIA.
Half an hour later, we spotted two zombies coming out of a small shack. One member of Rebel distracted them, and I was going around the side. A third zombie came around the house, growled, and the original two veered towards me. By then another two were coming. I started running backwards, and got two. A third tackled me, and I got her... But it was over. Weapon pinned, dead zombie on top, forth bit me.
Then a repeat. The forth and fith zombie were milling about, and the distraction from Rebel came up and bopped them in the head. He took my BP, my bothers, and my dagger. Zombies opted to stay and 'respawn' there, I walked back to camp.
Total survival time, 7 hours 10 minutes.
Survival recap:
Alpha Delta-
Axeman- N/A
Medic- N/A
Rat (Me)- KIA 7:10
DJ (Brother)- KIA 6:30
Goggles-? (Edit, survived!)
Zombie Dude- KIA 7:30-7:45
Dagger Bro- KIA 8:20
Top Hat- KIA 6:45-7:00
Overall rating 4/5. Most of the lulls in the action were our own group choice to avoid where the larger groups were staying. Only downside was the constant No-Duffs, and the mass recall. Which were due to other players, so I don't blame the Stay Dead Event for those.

Oy, yeah I'd have no stamina for that. Sounds like it was exciting though!
