Of depression and Uprezzing DMFA
11 years ago
Well not much to say here. Been crappy the last few days, my days of being more active may come to an end (but at least my place looks cleaner than it has for a year...).
So what's to say... The usual depression, contemplation of suicide, knifes hurt too much and my only gun is a BB gun, and I doubt that would do the job. So drink alcohol and read comics until I feel better...

And then we come to DMFA. I'm a big fan of DMFA and it's been, oh, 4 months since I read the series, time to re-read it again!
Except right now there's some slight annoyances, being that I don't like reading in a tiny window so instead I blow up the images to view full screen. Although most of the comics are decent resolution, the amount of zoom depends on the ratio, specifically taller ones get zoomed more (as zooms to fit width). This naturally leaves some images VERY VERY bad looking.
Thankfully I'm unintuitive and using a Ramdrive I've added a few jobs to enhancing the images I've gotten from the site in bulk, and then when I'm done delete them (as there's no reason to keep them after I've read them).
If anyone's interested I can post a comparison of zooming vs increasing resolution. Naturally it's not as good as if the resolution were naturally higher, but it's a web comic, can't argue with free.
So... If you have a program you can do bulk images (like PSP X) then here's the steps I use.
1) Jpeg artifact removal (Adjust->Remove noise). Low, 10%-20% crispness
2) Resize to 200% or 400% size. Your choice on technique for coloring.
If you choose the 400% option:
3a) Blur (Adjust->blur->blur)
3b) Sharpen it (Adjust->Sharpness->Sharpen)
Step 3a & 3b helps remove some of the blockier transformations that failed to be dealt with during resizing larger than x2. It's not intended to be perfect, just be easier on the eyes.
As for saving, I've been saving as jpeg, but since it's heavily uprezzing, you can lower the quality level, you may not notice anything under 20% (Although you might get away with 50%) so that's probably a safe number to accept for holding the images until you've glossed over them...
