It's said an economic collapse is imminent (possibly as early as October). It's not so much conspiracy, as it is pending. Maybe it won't happen, but if it were to happen, it just might be around the corner.

For simplicity, I'd say stock up on supplies that you need (that you can't get later). Consider it preparing for a blackout or earthquake. Stock up on:

food (non-perishable)
water purifiers/filters
water (1 gallon per person minimum)
first aid supplies
matches

I'd look for a large backup water source/supply, as city water is repeatedly recycled it won't be reliable; So if the waterworks goes down you should be able to get water from somewhere. You need 2 quarts of water per person per day (if you plan to store water), so minimum 3 gallons is a week's worth of water (for one person).

Lastly, I'd say make an emergency backpack with everything you'd minimally need to go camping. This should include the 5 or 10 C's of survivability.

And adding to this list I'd add a Map at least, as a Compass isn't much use without something to reference with.

Assuming I'm wrong, preparing won't hurt, and you might even learn a few things.
