If you ever find yourself out at night,
squint, look through your eyelashes at
a source of bright light, such as a full moon
or a street lamp,
and from the light, the figure of
a phoenix with spread wings and a long, blazing tail,
like a firecracker, will emerge.
Open your eyes again, and it disappears into darkness.
Squint again, and it reemerges. As though from ashes.
The bird is a celestial being, fleeting, eternal,
created entirely from an illusive light.
