I encounter an enemy KV-2, and nuke the hell out of him.

The exchange went on some more, but already at this stage it had reached 100% hilarity:
a) I have to assume that his opinion is that every player using russian tanks has to be a russian
b) he thinks all russians are idiots.
c) adding A and B results in himself assumign himself to be a total idiot. As such, he is clearly entitled to whatever opinion he states, and his quixotic behaviour makes complete sense.

I still wonder why he didn't just type "I'm an idiot" - because that was how he appeared to me, ignoring me driving leisurely past him to aim at his rear.
KV-2's really are slow, approaching him took me almost 20 seconds, but his turret was looking totally into the wrong direction, scanning the area for i-dont-know-what, so my speed was good enough to close the distance and get into range for an one-shot-kill.

When I mentioned I'm german he switched over to call me "Nazi".
With my conclusions drawn from his initial talk, I told him that I was muchly for "Heil Kräuter" ( "medical herbs" ).
Ever since, as people using the term "Nazi" seem to have no idea what it is, I casually mention that I love "Heil Kräuter" - I really do, lot's of teas in my cabinet.
This reassures these mentally infirms, as persuading them from anything else, or trying to explain the meaning of the term they used, is normally pointless.

However, in the last year I switched over to use the ignore-function of games much more aggressively, as this type of chitchat is slowly becoming exhausting - it is very repetitive, after all.

It's the cool thing nowadays, get pissed off and obnoxious for someone else.

Pretty sure sometime a long time ago we had a cool discussion on Rommel on a tank piece I did and we got into the differences between the Wehrmacht and Nazis and where they even clashed on occasion about practices in war.

In due time, people and companies develop entire departments for the sole purpose of making sure they do not offend anyone. It's like people still losing their minds over the swastika. Everyone forgets that for millennia before the 1930s, it was a symbol of peace. While the word Nazi brings up a hell of a lot of negative images it's all about how you use the word, not the word itself. Nazi is generally used these days to describe someone's attitude toward a particular topic, especially if they have a very strong stance toward it.

I have a friend who is a cop and is very focused on road policing. He takes a very hard line approach to traffic offences and is regularly called a traffic nazi by myself and others. So while he may be a "Nazi" he's not a homicidal nut, hell bent on world domination.

There's nothing wrong with the word, just the people who have thin skins and no understanding of context.

I personally preferred Chaplins "The Great Dictator" - In part because, when it was made, everybody ( in the US, Europe, obviously Germany ) hated it because it was criticising Hitler and Moussolini, durign the war everybody loved it ( aside of Germany and Italy ), and after the war everybody hated it because they suspected a communistic agenda behind the speech for peace at the end of the movie ( also hated in Russia ).

However the movie is so fucking great hilarious, especially concerning the - all-too-valid fact - that a small, black-haired guy wanted to make a master race of great healthy athletic blondes, supported by a cripple ( who happened to love communism ) and a fat morphine-junkie ( who loved american black peoples jazz music ).

To be fair, World War II was one of my favorite subjects and covers my favorite era of History. The Germans of the time had some exceptional technological innovations. I'll agree with the person above. I recall a time when you and a bunch of other artists had to deal with bullshit and often many of them were called evil art nazis over the whole ordeal. I've been called at least 50 different types of nazi so far, so it doesn't help that the word has no meaning to me beyond this: A cheap insult that is easily referenced since a dumb fuck has nothing else.

Context and communication are everything. You're coming at this from a perspective of a Jewish background and to you, using nazi is a way of reclamation. I think that's fair game, but I also see where with the facelessness of the internet, it's difficult to get that across to an average passer-by. there's nothing to directly show we're black, gay, Jewish, disabled, etc unless we make it a huge banner everywhere we go (and some choose to, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms). Some people may not approach the topic in the same way and are still touchy about it. Like all other volatile subjects, making it a big part of your identity or bringing it up a lot, it should be expected to create some either uncomfortable or heated discussions. The way I see it, people are allowed to be offended just as much as you're allowed to be amused. That's everybody's prerogative. The only one with say on if it should be used as a name is you and the owner of whatever website you're usng it on (personal websites don't fall under free speech). I don't see this as a debate over nazi's specifically so much as simply learning to operate in a very public, very large group (ie: the internet). If your name was "BlueDogWuffyBarks" and someone was like "the color blue is a trigger for me, you're banned" I'd be like, wow that person must have a hard time in life. That's a bit ridiculous. But with it being as racially and historically charged as nazis, I understand if it raises some eyebrows. That said, I think if I had no idea who you were, I wouldn't jump to an immediate ban. I'd ask some questions first to figure out where this person was coming from. If they explained its a joke or way of reclamation I'd just shrug it off. thays just me. People should talk and learn more. Even if it offends them right off the bat, taking a second to understand what's behind the use of a name can help diffuse it. When it would have been a german chatroom, I'd have some understanding - we are piss-scared of the whole issue still today and thus overly eager to stay away from everything even remotely related to that or implying anything alike.

However, I guess it was a US chat, so I guess you ran into somebody just as sensitive, or, for US terms, overly sensitive.


I'd say you'd need to keep in mind that it is, for a number of people , a hot-spot, polarizing topic.
Like when somebody would have a name like "kill-all-americans", "fuck_republicans" or "fuck_democrats".
Because that is how some people will perceive anythign containing "Nazi", "german" or, for that matter "may contain nuts".

There is no need to change your name, unless you sincerely wish not to edge with such people, be it for specific purposes ( learning from another artists by peeping into his chat ) or for other reasons ( future employer ).
But, as you use a name that can , no, will be problematic for certain people, you should get yourself a somewhat thicker skin in regards to people overreacting or going nuts. That it's people that don't think about what your names actually means - well, they short-circuit at the single word, independant of everything else around it.

And for Nazi stuff, remember playing on a WWII game U.S. server, a guy from Germany joined called Die Juden, which is German for "The Jew", but instantly banned him for a racial name for saying "death to jews" in his name, instead of asking to change name or question it.

I think it says a lot that the people who SHOULD be offended by stuff like Hogan's Heroes (you know, Germans) actually fucking love the show and when the old reruns made it over there in the 90's it quickly soared to hit #1 in the ratings. Clearly they can laugh at themselves.

As for being banned for your username, I'm surprised it was approved in the first place. I can tell you MMO's have serious name filters and anything like that wouldn't make the cut. I met a guy who tried to get around it by naming his character Aadolph and got a mod warning so he chose "Blackius" instead of "Hhitler" as he originally intended. I asked why he thought that was a good idea in the first place and he could only say "Because it's funny", so that rather revealed he just wanted to troll people.

I get banned by users just because they don't like me. Like I was banned from weasyl because one of the people that didnt like me happened to be friends with an admin. Go figure

What I find ironic is the same folks who get so agressive to ban/push out/silence anyone who even -MIGHT- have a view unpopular to them will retweet/repost/hold high any condemnation of, say, the killing of a cartoonist who died for a reason that was not so different. You have to be careful not to say certain things or you could be treated badly. I could understand if the behavior was disruptive/destructive or the idea what with the intent ot cause harm, but I agree with you on the angle in which it's used in your case.

The fanatic blind fury of a nation incensed to a degree that no one could have ever predicted shows to a very high degree the ridiculousness that sanctioned bad behavior can reach if it's allowed.
