Password-Locked Galleries
I'm looking for a site/gallery system to host some pictures to share with friends.
Here's the catch: I want it to be "gallery styled" and also locked to the public, only accessible by password entrance.
(And it probably needs to be relatively simple to use/organize.)
I know of a few people who host their own galleries through a program like this: http://gallery.menalto.com/
Unfortunately, I'm extremely technologically incompetent so I have no idea how to set that up/or if it's even good for what I'm looking for.
Photobucket allows for private albums that can be accessed via a guest password.
It's also very simple to use and organize.
But it's gallery set up is...aesthetically offensive.
Livejournal has a really simple to use, private album.
And the structure/appearance of their galleries I like a lot. (ex: http://pics.livejournal.com/dinicti.....llery/00002tse | Simple and clean is good!)
The problem with Livejournal is that you'd have to have an account there to access it. I don't think it allows you to set passwords for it.
Any suggestions on other sites/options to look into?
If all fails, I'll probably go with livejournal and set up a satellite LJ name so people that don't have LJs can access the album too.
I really don't feel like storing 400-500 of my files through LJ (that seems kind of lame).
If you have a more complicated solution and wouldn't mind helping me out/explaining things to me, I can reimburse you with art for your time.
Ideas?

I browsed through your gallery and the set up is similar to what I have in mind.
How do you set it up?
If you do it yourself, is it free? Or do you have to buy the script/program?
I browsed through the site, it gives you a surplus of information and a bunch of technical jamble that confuses me more than anything else. What's the general gist to setting it up yourself? What kind of webhost would you need? (examples of specific sites?)
Also any examples to which webhosts offer the pre-set up versions and an estimate to how much it runs to maintain the style/purchase the option?
It's been what? half a decade since I played around with webhosts and my own personal site. I don't really know which ones good anymore. Haha, is freewebs still workable?
I use Dreamhost, but almost all of them that I've seen have it. The option is typically included for free with the webhosting.
If you're doing it yourself, you'll need a server running PHP, CGI, and you'll want it to have ImageMagik or similar installed so it can resize images.
Setting it up is straight forward, once you've got it uploaded to the server. You go to the webpage, and follow the steps it gives you.
If you're hard up, I'll give you gallery space on my site for trade or something *chuckles*
