Google Chrome

So, yeah, thought I'd try Google Chrome today. Why? I don't remember. Something sparked a synapse in my brain, I guess.
ANYWAY. Uhm. It's nice. I like it. It's fast. Like, stupid fast. It's got all kinds of neat little features. Although, inexplicably, there's no middle mouse button scrolling. Like, you can't press the middle mouse button on a page and move the mouse around to scroll. I figured that was pretty standard in web browsers, but it's not a deal breaker.
Also, there's no big community of plugin developers, like Firefox has. Now, that doesn't matter much to me, I don't use that many plugins. Except for AdBlock, which, ahhh, that's the big one. I'm seeing ads again for the first time in years. But it's not that bad. They don't seem to be as obtrusive and obnoxious as they used to be. Except .... except for this one at Rock Paper Shotgun.
Holy SHIT. And of course it's shaking and flashing and BEEPING, all in Flash. Those things are still around? That's like ... that's like MEDIEVAL-level shit.
I tried clicking it, making sure I was in Incognito mode. Oh wow, I could win an Apple iPhone! JUST RELEASED! All I need to do is enter my E-mail address!
Uuuuhhhhgh. Ads. THIS might be a deal breaker. But it's so good otherwise!

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE OVER THE 1,000,000 VISITOR: CONGRATULATIONS YOU WON!!!!!!!!Holy SHIT. And of course it's shaking and flashing and BEEPING, all in Flash. Those things are still around? That's like ... that's like MEDIEVAL-level shit.

WELL, unfortunately I don't think Chrome will ever have Adblock. Google hosts too many ads to do that XD
It it's perfect. It doesn't block some ads, but for the most part, it gets rid of them. It's worth trying, in my opinion.
I can't stand it T.T
I have 2 G of ram, and it decided it needed 500mb T.T
The lack of extensions (not plugins, like Flash or Acrobat)? It's based on Safari's HTML engine, WebKit.
The extra use of RAM? Every tab you run, it runs a separate Chrome process. Why? Security. Folks in the Pown-2-Own contest at CanSecWest were able to take over Firefox, Safari, but not Google Chrome -- because it flushes the process not only between tabs, but also between pages! (Google has details on it's website in the form of a webcomic)
I used Chrome a bit, but I'm too addicted to the doodahs Firefox have. Oh well.
Like, it took me months to find out how to 'find on page' and shit like that.
<.<
I also spent the day playing around in Chrome on a lab machine and I liked it. It's different which means a whole new learning curve BUT It was the same way with Office 2007 and Firefox as well and I turned out liking those a lot better. The ram thing may be the downfall for me as this laptop has little to spare. On the other hand my firefox has been taking about 200-400 MB of ram on a constant basis for me even with only a few windows open so Chrome might be an improvement. I guess I'll give it a shot on this machine as well.
Pros:
- It's fast.
Cons:
- Uses RAM.
- Google keeps boasting about how fast it is. There's more important things.
- Writes gigabytes of data to the hard drive every time it boots ("Safe Browsing" feature). This makes SSD owners VERY unhappy.
- Interface can't be configured (no menus, no text lables).
- No dev or debug tools.
- Google doesn't WANT to support ad blockers.
- Google Update is a pain in the ass.
- Fails to add any new, severely needed security features. Safe Browsing is a cop-out and a political minefield.
And that it also sends anything you type in it to Google?
Love how firefox offers to save open tabs when you close it out.
Really, MS ought to look at absorbing noscript into IE, it'd be the best thing they ever did for the ol Internet Exploder.
What I don't like about NoScript is that it can only be used as a whitelist, not a blacklist. I use the Web Developer extension instead. It lets you control Java, JavaScript, the cache, and referrers with just one click, and doesn't ask to be updated every week. ;)
