What is a 'furry?'

'Aluminum to me, aluminium to some. You can shine like silver all you want but you're just aluminum.' Barenaked Ladies, Aluminum
This question comes to mind every once in a while, usually when Im re-listening to a bunch of old 2sense episodes (admittedly I dont enjoy the newer ones. Jakabe and Jibba were my preferred co-hosts.) BUt what is a 'furry?'
What does it mean to BE a furry? Its a term we use for anthro characters, but also generally group in plenty of other, feral or quadrupedal or otherwise characters as well, but when we talk about our real selves as 'furries,' what does it mean to people?
Ever from my own start in the fandom when I first discovered the term, I have gone by the definition that a furry is someone that is a fan of anthro art or characters. It had nothing to do with sex at all, never has for me. Theres lots of innocent stuff in the fandom, so to me a furry is not and never has been someoe that wants to have sex with anthros.
Buuuut... nowadays, I dont really know where most of the fandom stands with the term. It feels to me that the definition is sliding ever further towards the adult, mature nature of stuff. It bugs me, it does, because it ruins the name and a way for the more innocent, younger folks to identify, while also attracting an ever creepier crowd...
So Im looking for other opinions. What connotations are coupled with the term Furry for you now? If you hear such a word, does your mind go to sex, yiff and such?

All furries are is a group that enjoys making non-human characters or 'fursonas' to represent themselves, usually to interact with each other.
Don't be ashamed of sex, it's a very human aspect and it's something we were meant to enjoy. It's going to invade every aspect of our life, and all of our endeavers, and the Furry Fandom is no exception. Although all things in moderation; of course sex can be bad in a lot of cases, where consent is an issue or minors are involved, but other than that as long as it's the right place right time it can be a good thing :)
Also, not ashamed of sex, but it has its own place and time is all. I guess Im old fasioned, but I feel that a handshake is a proper greeting, not a murrypurry cuddlehug and a lick to the cheek. Ew.
What about tiny dragons that can't give proper handshakes? I think the whole lick thing comes from the way dogs greet, though the cuddlehug thing makes me want to carry around a stick to keep people out of my bubble :3 it's... a tiny bubble, but still!
I'm a furry. I draw a LOT of dragons - who often have the humanoid trait of being able to talk like a person, and often have humanoid intelligence (although not always.)
I'm a furry. I like cartoons with animal characters that are more than just background pieces or the main characters' pet.
I'm a furry. I don't fursuit and have no real intent to.
I'm a furry. I don't really like conventions.
I'm a furry. I used to adult art, but I don't any more, and don't really like looking at other people's adult art these days.
I'm a furry because that's the best label to describe why I hang out in this fandom, even if "Draconic" is a more comfortable one... it's harder to find interactive spaces that are focused on that particular side of things these days. It's a long time since I could spend hours hanging out on IRC #AFD - which was my original online "home."
