Oh wow. I don't even know what to think. While he wasn't necessarily one of my favorite artists, he was definitely one of my first exposures to... certain aspects of furry art. He was certainly one of the first artists I remember stumbling across when I first learned that furries were a thing.

Same here. And he was the first to show me the humorous side too.

This is truly a sad day. If not for Doug I wouldn't be in this fandom. I am sorry for your loss, for this loss to the entire furry community.

It's a sad day. He left behind an indelible legacy that will never be forgotten. And through that legacy, he will live on forever.

I think we can take solace that can be taken is that he is no longer in pain, that there was some warning of his passing, and that he had friends/family/fans in his final hours

I remember his drawings on VCL. That was nice to see a man who didn't take furry art seriously, who was joking about that... and who was drawing well.
Well, that was the best solution, to let him find the paradise of artists.

But well. One will wonder why I hate the cigarette lobby so much...

Thank you for breaking the sad news and being there for him during what sadly turned out to be his final days. I can only hope that the nurses were right and that he could at least know how much he meant to the community and he had so many friends, even if he could never meet them all.

Still, he was the first furry artist to ever catch my attention, and he had a huge impact on my relationship with the fandom and my "furry" identity. May he rest in peace.

He was easily my greatest inspiration early in my Furry days.. And our naughty pun wars back in the old Herm Haven have given me a long appreciation of puns in general. I didn't know him as well as I'd have liked, but I'm happy to have talked with him as often as I have.
We've lost a Titan, but he certainly had a long legacy. His meaty contributions injected the fandom with fertile ideas and a burgeoning swell of inspiration to pound them out on pixel and paper.

All I can honestly say is that I heard of Doug's illness and demise from my friend's postings here on FA. My favorite memory of Doug was when I was GOH at CaliFur, and his table was directly across from mine. It was great to see him doing good business, and selling his prints. One of my favorite lessons he taught me was how to get the Fans to think quickly of something for him to draw in sketchbooks. If one delayed too long, the fan was liable to get an outline image of an erect male member sketched up. Yes... I'm going to miss his wit, humor and those times we knocked a few ideas around.

Everyone's gotta go sometime; it's all just a long goodbye.

Never met him, but I am aware of his works and all the people he's inspired.

I'm very sorry to hear that. Doug was my favorite artist and one of the first hyper artists I discovered in the fandom way back on VCL. I've been avidly following his art for over 13 years, and it has touched my life in a very real way.

I've posted this elsewhere, but it's worth repeating: Wow! :/ ...And my father has a similar condition so this is doubly hard to hear. I remember how I really wanted to hate him, years ago... but then I actually met the guy at cons and ended up really liking him. Even though I generally disliked a lot of his pervy art (it just wasn't in my taste), he was clearly a talented artist and highly detailed but what he fell short on for me in his gallery he clearly made up for in being an incredibly interesting and compelling conversationalist. I can honestly say that it hurts to hear that he's passed away. :(

Say what you will about his hyperendowed characters and their implausible-at-best/ridiculous-at-worst anatomy, but Winger had a unique knack of blending hardcore eroticism and comedic exaggeration, and his artistic career spanned decades, stretching back to the early-internet days of indie-press magazines, dial-up bulletin-boards, and Usenet postings, meaning that he’d been drawing longer than many of his fans in the furry community have been alive.

He was a legend and icon of the furry fandom, and whether you laughed or cringed when his name or art were mentioned, odds are you still knew who he was and what he was known for, even if you’d never personally set an eye on any of his art yourself.

Rest well, Doug.

I am so sorry.

Doug's long suffering is at an end. I know it sounds harsh, but we should be grateful for his sake. For he can now fly free and be unburdened of a failing body evermore. For his friends and family that he leaves behind there will be pain for some time to come. This is unfortunately a natural consequence of him being such a good and unique personality. That he was able to have so many good friend speaks well of the man. I am sure then that the lives he touched were changed for the better. And that the many good memories he has given to his friends will far outlast they pain they are feeling now. Goodbye Douglas Winger you were much appreciated in this world, and so you will be in the next one too I imagine.

Can't say I was ever really a fan of his work... but he seemed like a really nice person, and it's truly sad to see one of the most beloved artists in the fandom go. He was there from the start, and we'll miss him.

I heard about his death last night on 4chan of all places. Dammit, another one I never got to meet. He was never a member of Rowrbrazzle (I just checked Edd Vick's list which I keep updated), but that doesn't mean his passing won't be noted.

He was just about one year older than me (I'm 57). That's not so old, is it?

Actually he was 61

Math is hard. I thought I saw a different birth date someplace online that had him born in June 1956 or thereabouts. (cleans his glasses)

I first "met" Doug online back in the late 1980's on GEnie's "beastie board." he was genial, quick-witted and a good story-teller. I am sad that he is gone and my thoughts are for those he left behind.

Doug was one of the first wave of artists whose works I came across in the furry fandom. He'll be sorely missed. My condolences to all his family, friends, and loved ones.

Doud was a great inspiration to meny and will be forever remembered by all.

I remember back in school I'd sneak onto the computer so I could browse VCL's new uploads page.

Aol's long ass shrieking and raging static sounds while establishing an Internet connection would often betray my efforts and dad would know i was online. I'd constantly have to look over my shoulder so he wouldn't see me scroll past a Doug Winger thumbnail! 😂
