Hello Talbaine. Any advice you have for someone who, like me, has been out of practice for a few years or beginners?

Best advice I can give anyone is truly want and need your goal all the way down to your bones. Let it fuel you and motivate you every day and *practice*. No one can get better or become the best at anything without practice, hard work, and studying. Devote yourself to your craft, but above everything - HAVE FUN.

What motivated you to become very talented and hard working?

I've been drawing since I could remember - I think a deep desire just keeps propelling me to become better and better at what I do, and keep learning new things. Its an adventure every time to learn a new skill and, to me, that is very exciting.

At the moment with work being in the way, always am either playing Super Smash Bros (3DS and Wii U version), Mario Kart 8 and sometimes League of Legends. :3

My name is Nyst, and Nyst is a dragon persona I play as online (which is what makes me "furry"). I commission artwork of various characters, and you were so kind to create something for me once before. I'm a sci-fi and fantasy nerd. I guess what I'd like to say is I really appreciate professional artists like yourself posting on the site, as there is some really great artwork out there, and it's good for you to bring some of that to us (plus have the opportunity for us to commission it). That is a great question!

I try not to regret things, but I definitely regret not doing more 3D work in college and learning more about the processes. I'm a good sculptor with clay, and I just wish I had taken the opportunity to learn digital sculpting too. I'm actually in the process of teaching myself now (veeerrry slowly) so someday I can begin work in video games and film in a 3D way instead of 2D

How long have you been freelancing for Paizo and such?

Oh nice!! Always nice to meet people who play. I actually need to update my bio - I got a studio art job in February and havent worked with Paizo since then but prior to that I worked with them a little over 2 years :)

Ahh alright. What was it like, working for Paizo?

It was great, their art directors are very thorough and prompt. Only downside was the rate of pay but thats just how the freelance game is :)

this is gonna sound like a lazy answer, but I assure you its not: I dont have any books to recommend, because I never used any lolol. Honestly I just practice and practice and practice and im very hard on myself.

Any game I could never get bored of...hm...probably like Diablo 3 or Destiny...hell even games like Pokemon Snap. I think the list is lon g:)

My favorite dish - probably sushi. Endless sushi. Of all kinds!

That doesn't sound like a lazy answer lol. Practicing almost every day has help me tremendously so pratice does seem like the sure fire way of getting better. Books just seem to point out things that aren't always noticeable but really makes a difference in how something looks. It's very impressive how good you are with just practice though o.o Is there anything specific you think a person should pratice often? Like warm up excerisies, values, etc.

Sounds like you've played a lot of great games! I've always wanted to try a bunch of different sushi but it's always hard to try and get someone to try it with me xD

The most important thing to me when studying is always value first, then how materials react. In my opinion, color is secondary and as long as you have convincing values and form, it will be a successful image. While we're on the topic I want to start studying more again.

I personally dont do warm ups or speed paints anymore - I learn best by painting the shit out of something til I understand how it works. So i suggest studying, but not doing speed paints. Study, and truly spend time on it, and understand how it works. :)

It'd be interesting seeing the results from any of your studies.

That's usually how it works for me too, except I usually draw the shit out of something and then just color the stuff I like in. I've wanted to get into painting for a long time though. I think I'll study values a lot more and try to actually paint things in the future.

Keefur here, or if I am in fursuit, I am Cutter Cat the Sabertooth. I'm a lazy predator and only hunt in elevators so the prey cannot run very far. In RL I am a printer and do all kinds of stuff from paper back books to mini posters to large format banners and stickers and such. I am president of  fangcon in Knoxville, Tennessee and am on staff or assist one way or another with several other cons. I also print lots of con books, theme items, Furry paper backs, etc. and I do lots of promotions for different cons. I've been in the Fandom for about 7 years now and am a greymuzzle twice over. If you ever feel the itch to make an art book or have your stuff made into vinyl banners or tees, let me know. Oh! I'm also a Photoshop nut.

I like seeing Sabertooths (of course) in art. When I first got my fursuit, there were maybe 4 Sabers in suit. At FWA there were 20 Saber suiters. I like medieval or viking/barbarian looks and you have a nice touch with armor. I would like to see more of that from you.

I try my best to paint as much as I can. If there's a slow day at work I'll paint, and if I have free time on weekends I paint.

Prior to getting this studio job and my own apartment I'd paint every day all day :)

I make a living off commissions and am very happy doing so, although god I WISH I had your level of talent. Despite my stupidly happy/cute art style I am deceptively a really big fan of the horror genre and collect horror movies and games.

I'm not sure about most recent movie, my favourites tend to be from the 80s/early 90s range. Stuff like Hellraiser, The Thing, Event Horizon, Aliens, The Re-Animator, An American Werewolf in London and The Company of Wolves, among others. I like anything that ranges from hilariously terrible to genuinely chilling.

That's probably my favourite, I love that one so much. I find the design/concept of the aliens to be really neat and the story very chilling. I love anything with a great unique creature design and an interesting cast of characters, that can really make a movie special.

It's pretty awesome, and they have great deals sometimes. like I literally paid 11 dollars for all the skyrim expansions and skyrim when i bought it. Which is a huge discount compared to the 70ish dollars my brother paid for the base game when he bought it for xbox.

I'm the kind of person who studies a ton for fun but overdoes in the sense of not producing much artwork per se, but at least I don't post stuff to then throw a fit and delete everything. At least I'm busy with a job and studying other fields for now, so I can blame the lack of stuff posted for that for now. ;3

What are your intentions and/or reasons behind choosing a more photorealistic drawing style but also keeping same aspects present in photography like chromatic abberation? You can go very technical with me, if I haven't made that clear enough, also I'm very very curious for your answer. =3

I've always favored the more photo real when it comes to painting. I still have a very saturated and high-fantasy feel at times, but my other work (which is quite different from my FA work) is much more realistic and sometimes experimental. Like a photo, I always like to add focal points by not only controlling the depth of field but adding noise as well to make it all a cohesive image, to make it just a little bit more believable. The chromatic abberation is something I like to add cause it helps the image just enough, not only again with cohesion, but because it adds just a tiny bit more depth :)

Cool! But I meant, like, why photorealism instead of something else?

I guess the short answer is, I've always pushed myself to make something as real and tangible as possible, especially things that we dont always see in our everyday world. So attempting to make everything believable, not only does it push me as a creative, but pushes me to try and see things as they would actually behave in our world, no matter what they are.

But then, I'm curious. Why PHOTOrealism? Why not what the eyes can see?
