Have you looked into Gimp? It is what I have used for some pieces. They just updated it so it's a bit more user friendly.

I have tried to use Gimp and I can't seem to figure it out. but I might download it again and see if I can make it work!

I have heard good things about firealpaca as well.

I used to use fireaplaca all the time but it didn't have all the brush possibilities that I'd have like.

That is my problem with Gimp as well.
