Internship Completed
Finished up my internship in Houston, and after a 19 hour drive, I'm back in the Dairyland. I enjoyed everything about it, the animals, the physical work, the fun and nice keepers and other interns. The only thing I didn't like was the city traffic. Besides shoveling a literal shit ton of poop and sorting animal food, I have:
Cared for: red river hogs, maned wolf, anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, rheas, bongos, duikers, ground hornbills, gerenuks, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, rhinos, kudus, elands, nyalas, storks, okapis, Speke's gazelles, blue cranes, and California sea lions
Pet: ostriches, rheas, bongos, duikers, capybaras, giraffes, okapis, eland, rhinos
Fed by hand: duikers, giraffes, rheas, bongos, okapis, gerenuks, hornbills, storks, blue cranes, rhinos, ostrichs, capybaras, maned wolf (sorta)
Been licked by giraffes, okapis, anteaters, and bongos
Been sneezed on by a giraffe
'Kissed' giraffes
Been pecked by rhea and ostriches
Helped move 2 bongos, a tapir, and a zebra
Broken a window
Cared for a newborn nyala
Lost an adult giraffe, a neonatal giraffe, and a newborn nyala
Observed medical procedures on a okapi, nyala, wolf, and eland
My favorites were the anteaters, rhea, bongo, and absolutely the duiker!
Outside of the zoo, I went to a roller derby, which was really impressive and a ton of fun, and I saw the Ringling Bros Circus, which also was really impressive and fun! I visited the Museum of Natural History, and their paleontology exhibit is amazing! And after my comparative anatomy class, I could appreciate a lot more.
I'm really going to miss the zoo and my coworkers, but life must go on. I have a week to take a break, and then I move to start vet school. Wish me luck!
