News and A New Thing
Hello all! It's been a while since I've made an update in this here journal - mostly because it's been a while since I've made major progress with M.E.A./Felton Irregulars things, aside from getting up some newer True Facts pieces, some other wonderful art posts - and, very recently, to my delight, two stories that you may have noticed: "The Little Bird in the Lions' Den," the collaborative piece written by myself and my mate,
JosephH, as well "Expanding Horizons," a shorter piece Joseph wrote after being inspired by some art commissioned from
Omina of our characters, Hilde (one of his contributions to the Felton/M.E.A. universe) and Harriet. I'm absolutely thrilled that we've gotten some stories up - hopefully I'll be getting some more worked out in the near future.
There's been a lot of stress in our lives of late that's been less than conductive to a creative mind frame. There's been progress, but not as much as I'd like - but I'm still going, and working on some changes that'll help reduce that. In the meantime, though, I've come up with an idea to both explain some things in the M.E.A. universe that may be unclear, vague, or has only been passingly addressed in the past, and (maybe) help with further world building - particularly if anyone out there has a question about some aspect of the Felton/M.E.A. universe that they want further clarification on!
So, for the first time ever, welcome to Felton Irregulars Defined! Essentially a glossary/dictionary/encyclopedia/whatever the appropriate term is of people, places, things, and terms from the setting I'm working in! I'm going to try and do this every one to two weeks, addressing five to ten subjects. Starting out, I'm only going to list a few of the most recurring subjects or ones that I'm particularly dwelling on at the time. My hope, though, is that maybe some of you fine watchers will ask questions about subjects you've come across in the gallery, or really anything you might be curious about so I can take the opportunity to both share some information from my little world of weird - and maybe figure out some more about it myself!
Time to kick things off! Going to start with the most obvious one:
Man-Eaters Anonymous (M.E.A.): A support group for predatory beings who wish to find alternatives to satisfy needs or curb behaviors (instinctive or acquired) that are harmful or abusive towards other beings (often humans), and seek help in making such changes.
Extranatural(s): An entity or entities that are native to Earth (i.e. born on), but are in some way outside the norm, such as Werewolves, Vampires, Tcho-Tchos, Ghouls and various other "Monsters." Also frequently referred to as Extees or XTs.
Supernatural: Per Miriam-Webster, supernatural is defined as "of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe; especially of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil," or "departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature."
This definition still applies in this universe, and often applied in situations involving Extranaturals, as well as strange phenomena in nature; "Supernaturals" is often used interchangeably for non-human entities. However, it isn't always the most accurate term for Extranaturals. Truly supernatural creatures usually fall into certain categories of the Undead, Ghosts, Demons, Spiritual entities, or entities from beyond this physical realm.
The Supernatural Response, Research and Relations Agency (S.3.R.A.): In nearly every nation (or at least every industrialized nations), there is at least one (if not more) government agency, task force, or department established to deal with concerns regarding Extranaturals, the supernatural, and all the stranger aspects of the world. In the United States, S.3.R.A. satisfies that function. The agency and its operatives fulfills multiple functions, as its name might indicate, but for every function it serves or service it provides, its primary goal is keeping all the more "unusual" aspects of the world under humanity's radar.
As its moniker would also imply, there are three departments in the agency, each with its own functions and responsibilities. In brief, the more basic functions are:
- Response: Various law enforcement duties, both within the non-human and human communities; most emergency responder services.
- Research: Studying non-human entities and supernatural/paranormal phenomena; collecting and maintaining data; repurposing extranatural, paranormal, supernatural, or extraterrestrial resources for practical purposes.
- Relations: Providing social and public services to non-human entities and humans influenced by the supernatural; coordinating between mundane authorities and the Agency; PR work to keep the human public's knowledge of the non-human world to an absolute minimum.
Felton, Massachusetts: A coastal New England college town. It was founded in the late 1600s-early 1700s, it was initially a small fishing and farming community, as well as minor trade hub due to being located near the mouth of the Miskatonic River. The Felton University of the Arts and Sciences (F.U.A.S.) was created in the early 1800s, and almost immediately entered something of a rivalry with neighboring Arkham's own Miskatonic University.
While the town doesn't have quite the prestige of Arkham or its school, it's no less a thriving, bustling community (it averages around 20,000 residents year round, not counting extreme fluctuations due to the student population or others who seasonally call the town home). It's spread across both sides of the Miskatonic's mouth, and possesses a healthy shipping industry, as well as other economic business. There's also a rather dense forest near the town that's been designated as a wildlife refuge, though some areas allow for camping.
As with many other cities and bergs in the area, it has a reputation for strange, sometimes paranormal activity of various forms, and unusual individuals that call it home. The locals shrug it off on average, though; after all, every town has its rumors and ghost stories… And every town has its secrets.
The Underground: The secret of Felton. The town was established as a safe haven for Extranaturals and humans either connected with them or otherwise with the supernatural in the wake of the fear and paranoia Salem Witch Trials. While the humans and near-human looking Extranaturals settled on the "surface," the stranger residents, those that were unable to pass for human or could not manage surface life for other reasons, found their way to caverns that were accessible off the river. They expanded under the town, digging deep, reinforcing through various means against water and other elements, and creating secret access points to the surface.
The Felton Underground doesn't quite cover the same boundaries the city above does - it has had to divert for various reasons - but it is a considerably sized community, matching (if not surpassing) the one on the surface. It has its own school, businesses, government and institutions - although several of them are connected with or extensions of the city above - with an unimaginably diverse population. It is what the town's founding fathers and mothers wanted it to be; a (mostly) secret place for those who don't fit in with the human realm to grow, live and prosper - while still maintaining some of its ties with the rest of the world.
Annnnd that's our first update for Felton Irregulars Defined! Hoped that either cleared some things up for some of you folks, if you did have questions - ooooor if it inspired more questions, or there's other things you've seen in the gallery that you think needs some explanation, ask away and I'll hit it on the next round of Felton Irregulars Defined! If you don't ask, you'll be leaving it up to random chance what will be cropping up!
As for next week's update - WELL, I'll admit, that one's already decided on! I hope you like Trolls - and I don't mean the WoW or Internet variety! See you then!
