Felton Irregulars Defined Update At Last (And Life BS Again)
It's been a while since I've put an F.I.D. or any kind of personal journal up; I've been experimenting with keeping that on Tumblr - plus there haven't been too many of them beyond what's already here... Plus, there has been just... So much crap with this year, and it's still so close to the beginning. The worst thing being that I lost my Grandmother a week after my birthday - and this was just over a month after my Granddaddy died (two days before Christmas).... Add to that financial stresses and other things going on in life, it's... Urgh. I'm failing at words - which is really bad for someone trying to be a writer. But it's been a lot of heavy weights, and it's been wearing on me a lot...
Anyway, I've got a few extra F.I.D. updates for here, and I'm trying to work up another right now. Have a few other things that I'm working on - short stories, various little things in my project. Going slowly due to work dragging me down and distractions, but trying... As per usual, if anyone has a question with what's in the entry, or you want to see another topic explored, let me know and you might get the decision on a future entry! In the meantime...
Among the definitions of Magic, it is defined as a power that allows people to do impossible things by saying special words or performing special actions; or the use of means believed to have supernatural power over natural forces. Or, simply, a special power, influence, or skill. Some describe magic as just natural phenomena that science has yet to explain or quantify. In a world of Extranatural beings and strange goings on, the presence of magic is quite readily accepted - if not too easily explained, though there are some experts and agencies (such as the Supernatural Response, Research and Relations Agency) do try to explain where it comes from, how it works, and what makes some people capable of being magic users while others seem unable to tap into it - or even acknowledge magical or supernatural effects when they're right in front of their faces.
There are many ways to categorize and define the differing varieties of magic in the world; there's really no right or wrong way, no completely standardized system. The Research division of S.3.R.A. tries to keep it simple, though, by breaking it down into four very generalized forms. This is no easy task, and there is considerable overlap between the different categories, but they are as follows:
- Racial: There are several Extranatural beings that are inherently gifted in magical abilities, or have a certain gift or gifts inherent to their race - and, thusly, are categorized as Racial magics. This is seen in various Shapeshifter species with their knack for transmogrification, the numerous Fae or varied Demonic beings with their varied mystical gifts, certain Protean talents - like the Sirens "song" or Gorgons paralyzing people into a stone-like state, many of the Dreamlander races and their ability to tap into the energies of that other plane to reshape the world, travel between worlds, and manipulate both natural and unnatural forces. Some beings are just born certain skills - and others have to gain them through other means.
- Ritual: There have been various forms of mystical or paranormal phenomena found around certain people of various religious practices. Practitioners of Voudon (commonly known as Voodoo), Wiccans and Witchcraft, other "pagan" religions - and even main stream faiths as the many variants of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. These typically fall in with what are considered Ritual magics, with spells or "miracles" fueled by acts of faith or, as the name indicates, enacting rituals, and some form of chanting or prayer. It should be noted, though, that the results of this kind of magic are often quite unpredictable; when channeling the forces of faith or calling on a higher power, one can’t be sure of what strings might be attached.
- Natural: Some people are just able to tap into the primal forces or elements of the world (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, etc.), and are able to bend, shape and warp it to their will, for whatever needs or fancy they might have. Or there are locations that lend themselves to certain mystical forces that some people are able to tap into to fuel certain abilities or particular kinds of magic; ley lines, arcane hot spots, alternate realms of exsistance, etc.. These fall into the realm of Natural magics - mystical energies or forces either inherent to the world, or capable of interacting with nature and affecting it.
- Constructed: The magics that were invented exclusively in the providence of Man are referred to as Constructed. These normally include Summoning and Conjuring, with the difference in definition being that Conjured beings are created from nothing, while Summoned beings are pulled from other realities or elsewhere in the same world. This includes summoning Demons, extra-dimensional beings and creating things such as Golems and Elementals from scratch - and sometimes even aforms of necromancy. Generally these are magics that were formed as bastardizations of pre-existing magics, twisted to serve a specific purpose until either they fit the mold given or broke it and made a new one. These spells are difficult, time consuming and above all else dangerous, and are rarely practiced with "good intentions".
