You might have heard about this story not that long ago...
http://bgr.com/2015/10/26/who-bacon.....-cancer-risks/
(its also on NPR, Wired, etc etc etc)
In essence WHO (The World Health Organization) has stated that, for all intents and purposes, Bacon is in the "Group 1" of carcinogens, while red meat is in "Group 2A" , that is, possibly carcinogenic.
Before I say something I might regret.... >_<
May I just say: YES, I know full well that BACON is a rather unhealthy meat product.
However...
I -don't- eat it on a regular daily basis (as shocking as that sounds) NOR would I recommend that anyone do that either!
Much like ANYTHING ELSE - this is something you need to enjoy in moderation!!!
But I ain't about to go cold turkey bacon either, in case you're wondering...so seriously guys...you can take my slab of sausages and cold cuts and shove it where the sun dont shine >_<
Grr!

Grr!
The nitrates and added crap are the problem.
Oscar Mayer's Selects line is damned tasty without being prohibitively expensive for those on a budget (*cough*Applegate*cough*).
We eat sausage still fairly often, but you can't do it all. I've been managing to buy a lot of our canned goods organically, which is freaking amazing. $1.79 for a jar of organic marinara... I can't make it for that price! I raise my own chickens and muscovy ducks. The ducks were meant to be dinner, but my plans and reality don't always line up (those bastards don't put themselves in my freezer )
...although ya MAY wanna be careful 'bout sayin' "Take yer slab'a sausage an shovin' it where the sun don't shine..." around here... ya might wind up with lots of unintended acceptors willin' ta take ya up on yer offer... ;)
In particular, this section:
In the UK, around six out of every 100 people get bowel cancer at some point in their lives.
If they were all had an extra 50g of bacon a day for the rest of their lives then the risk would increase by 18% to around seven in 100 people getting bowel cancer.
"So that's one extra case of bowel cancer in all those 100 lifetime bacon-eaters," argued Sir David Spiegelhalter, a risk professor from the University of Cambridge.
You may all sleep easy again.
Can't eat the fish because mercury and toxic waters. Can't eat chicken because salmonella and bird flue. Can't eat pork or beef because of greenhouse gas, global warming, and animal cruelty. Can't eat any "farmed" meats because of antibiotics and hormone-dosing. And CERTAINLY can't hunt your own, because anit-gun and anti-hunting and even more cruelty.
Can't have cabbage, melons, or leafy green things because of Listeria, CNN runs articles that Veggies are the major cause of Foodborne Illnesses. (http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/01/healt.....-illness-time/ )
Can't have apples because of Alar and there's arsenic in the cider.
Even if you buy that "nasty" meat, you can't Grill it, cause grilling = cancer. So does the trace chemicals in the wood smoke if you smoke it! And heaven forbid you cook it in your Teflon skillet! They kill birds, ya know! And that means they'll kill you too! Can't even boil water (ewwww, not TAP water!!! Eeeee!) in your aluminum pots! That causes Alzheimer's!
Got to avoid rice due to Arsenic, and other grains due to Gluten. No milk or dairy due to lactose and bovine growth hormones. Just walking by the sandwich meats display will cause the nitrates and processing chemicals to leap out of the packages and strike you dead where you stand.
If wuff held with all the "bad for you" warnings and precautions, Vrghr would be reduced to nothing but breathing the air! Oh wait... air quality.... (fails)
Nope, this wuff gives up! It's literally impossible to pay attention to every warning they issue and not die of starvation. So wuff is going to continue to enjoy his bacon and sausage and eggs and toast and grilled meat and smoked beef. In fact, this wuff already created a recipe that includes nearly every one of them in the same sandwich. Just needs a fried egg on that Bacon(X5) Bourbon BBQ Burger to his the "instant death lottery"!
May just have to make one of those tonight, in defiance!!
Phooey. Gonna die anyhow, still gotta eat.
"Meat gives you cancer' just as "waxing floors causes skull fractures."
also, dark-chaos, i love that article, damn alarmists in the media need a good tempering piece
Wuff's thought - Follow The Money! Who or what stands to make bucks off this "study"? And how much are those promoting it invested in that?
Even the bloke who chaired the discussion on this has pointed out he still plans to eat bacon.
Every food that I have eaten in my life at some point over the last 40+ years has been accused in some way of causing cancer. Even Apples, carrots and other veg and fruit because of pesticides and certain fertilisers or gmo's, cereal's and grains are contaminated or red meats. Don't use a BBQ because the the dark bits on the meat may be carcinogenic. The current one being bacon, salami and processed meats. Go Paleo, Go gluten free, go vegetarian or vegan, go pescetarian...the list goes on.
In regards to my dietary choices ."Everything in Moderation"
Unless certain foods make you ill, cause anaphylactic shock or cause other bonafide allergic reactions then I take it all with a pinch of salt (oops can't have salt now either ) and choose a varied, omnivorous diet. My teeth are designed for grinding, ripping and tearing. To me this is a good indication that I am designed to consume mixed grains, veg and fruit matter as well as meats of different types. I have preferences on things I like or don't like but I do not permit them to rule what I eat. I don't like onion because it gives me the farts...but I eat it occasionally as it has good benifits. I don't eat garlic for the same reason...but time (several hundred years and science) has proven it has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties so I have some on a regular basis. I'm over weight so I choose to have a low fat diet...take note that is LOW fat not NO fat. Some fats are needed.
Its great if you want to try different diets out but its not worth the stress some people go through to force themselves to stick to them. The diet most likely won't kill you but the stress will.
In regards to causing the big C - Cancer.
There is no mention of the fact that cancer has existed throughout time. People lived with it and died from it on a regular basis. It was often referred to as wasting disease or people had cancerous lesions on their bodies and many died considerably younger than today. They say we are seeing more and more of it but don't mention that we can diagnose it a lot faster and easier making the numbers rise simply because we can identify it in greater numbers now. We live longer than in the past so of course a naturally occurring disease is going to show up more as it now has more time available per person to do so.
My advice
Take the information on board, look at it like a tree amongst a forest, look at how much you eat, look for balance, eg: reduce your consumption of bacon if you eat it 24/7 to just a small addition once or twice a week. Make sure you eat a mixture of fruits and veg, include dairy products, include grains, proteins and fats but ensure your diet is balanced. Most of all don't fret about it. If you have a medical issue that diet has proven to help then seek advice from a professional dietician to help you work it out.
*hugs* sorry for the rant
I have had colon cancer. Did you know your genetics can give you colon cancer? If anything contributed to my cancer I'm betting it was mommy dearest and her relentless smoking.
Did you know colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death?
By the time you have symptoms it has usualy spread to the liver and lymph nodes
Doctors like to ignore symptoms in the under 50 croud but thanks to something called lynch syndrome even teens can have colon cancer.
My main symptom was rectal bleeding. Because I am overweight my doctor wrote it off as hemrroids 6 yrs later the bleeding becomes debilitating. I had a new doc who caught the problem and despite the time that had passed the cancer was in early stage.
Munch munch, Yum!
