Difficulties

Got a pretty letter the other day from the place I had high hopes for. Had an official letterhead and everything.
It was a rejection letter.
I'm sort of used to these things--being told I'm not quite what people are looking for--but this one stung a little. Beyond the obvious, it stated there was a complete overflow of people interested in the position. I have lots of competition, it seems. These are difficult times, to be sure--but it's more than that. The major breadwinner in this house was just told that her position was being axed entirely due to budget constraints; and her patience for me to get a position is running out rapidly.
I don't want to be stuck in another dead-end zero hour position, like the one I had at the department store. I want even less to work the foodcourt again. I've worked GOOD jobs before--canvassing-ground ops for the US census, assisting in training, so on...s o I have a hard time stepping back from that to close to minimum wage.
Should I ask if I can go to college? Should I try for grants? There's so much on my plate right now.

School and finding a good job are important, yes. But they also can be done any time, a few months or years down the road when things are financially more stable.
A warm bed and roof over your head however, those are immeadiate needs and should always take priority. If you do feel those're in jeopardy, then take a crappy low paying job just for the sake of keeping those. It doesn't need to be forever, just until everything in life gets a lil less hectic. Besides, you'll prolly find better jobs and oppertunities once you do have a job. It's kinda annoying, but those things never come up while you're looking initially, just later on... 'A watched pot never boils,' and all I guess. =x
College is good, but with what you have in your account, all you probably could do is attend a community college at best and pray for some massive scholarship to a 4 year place. If you have a job while doing that that'll cover the astronomical college prices (and help with the student loans afterwards) well maybe it'll work, but you might be best getting some money in the bank first and securing the residence you have now for starters.
