Geeking Out over Star Wars

SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY
So I saw the new movie a month after everyone else did, but now I have a lot of questions. In particular there are some strange characters like Rey who are not really explained...who are her parents? Why is she left on Jakku with no one to love her? Is she the daughter of Luke Skywalker? How did she learn to fight so well? Clearly Rey is strong in the Force so we assume she had good lineage but is that just because Star Wars makes everyone related to Darth Vader? Why is she so important?
Then Rey has the chaotic vision when she touches Luke's old light saber and it was too fast for me when I saw it in the theatre but I looked it up on YouTube and it appears that she witnessed a lot of people being killed when she was young and the Knights of Ren were there with weapons. As one of the men approaches her to inflict more damage, a red light saber impales him from behind and it's a young Kylo Ren who has saved her life. Why? Then she is on Jakku and a transport ship is flying away. Who dropped her off? On YouTube I learned that this was a First Order ship, so did Kylo Ren drop Rey off on a desert planet? That would explain a few things, like why he singles her out later in the film. He knows her from way back when he saved her life. And why would he do that?
At the end of the film she flies all the way to some remote island where Luke has been hiding to return his light saber and... talk to him? When she and Luke clap eyes on eachother there is a Moment. My thinking is that she is his daughter or why else would we linger on this scene with no dialogue? Jedi knights are not supposed to marry or breed but we all KNOW they have done this before. It would also explain why she is Special and why Kylo Ren cared enough to spare her life and drop her onto a remote dune planet. Rey is Kylo's first cousin. There will be no romance, I hope.
Lastly who is Snoke?

I'm wondering how it's gonna play out as well...too bad we couldn't go nerd out over it together LOL
2 - I have not looked into those yet I can guarantee it's not the case, seeing how massively uninspired and predictable the movie is.
The only thing I don't think is warranted is calling the director "Jar Jar Abrams" as have been the none at all small portion of the people who hated the movie - It is an insult to Jar Jar Binks
All Star Wars material outside of the movies has been declared non-canon for the purposes of this film, Zahn's books included.
2) Not in any way. Really, it couldn't, without all the main characters of the original trilogy being recast. It's been thirty years or so, in and out of universe.
As for snoke, I wonder if he may be a long lost TRUE Sith... Like the Sith species.
Many years ago I read some of the Expanded World StarWars books. I forget some of the finer details but Rey, if I'm not mistaken is the child of major cast members. However, events in the movie that occurred on a catwalk diverged sharply from those books. THer books are also seen as the author's view of that world an "do not necessarily reflect the true nature of that universe." or some such thing.
Another burning question: Is Poe hot for Finn? That look Poe gives Finn when he says "keep the jacket". Rowr. That is a look of more than just "best bros".
Rey was probably dropped on the dune world to protect her from her own destiny as a jedi as well as following her cousin's, Kylo/Ben, fall into corruption by the dark side.
Kylo turned against Luke, his master, pulling - what I'm guessing - another Order 66, yet was to kill only Luke and rebuild the Sith all over again using the younglings. Instead, it went south and he pulled an 'Anakin' and all were killed, except Luke.
It's just what my guts been telling me. The new movie is all the previous movies mashed together.
On the other hand, I stopped caring about star wars since Disney got their hands on it as well as LucusFilm announcement that All EU [Expanded Universe] books, comics, games and novels are now non-canon.
I'll take the original EU books and Legacy of the Force books over what Disney plans to do to the franchise. The kids were already set up. Luke had a son, Ben and Leia had twins, Jacen and Jaina, and a son, Anakin.
All the new books I found are made for young adult or kids. There hasn't been one truly good novel printed yet.
Welcome to the party Dustmeat! This is what other Star Wars nerds have been geeking out over since the movies hit. There's a lot to see in the movies, and a lot of unanswered questions. What most of us have had to go on is parallels and differences from the Expanded Universe materials. In EU Han and Leia had twins, both Jedi one light and the other went dark, but Han and Leia's dialog made it sound like "Ben" was an only child.
Luke also had a child in the EU, his wife was Mara Jade, one of The Emperor's other secret apprentices (he didn't put all his eggs in the Vader's Basket).
Snoke -might- be Emperor Palpatine's former master. A Sith Lord who reputedly had mastered life and death. Remember every Sith had a Master before them, so the Emperor himself must have had a master.
Funny thing is, dig deep enough into the existing source material and you're left with as many questions as answers. What does seem definitive though is Disney after obtaining the Star Wars IP declared the EU books and whatnot as non-cannon. They wanted to take Star Wars in their own direction, BUT they also seem to be using some of the EU material, cherry picking the good stuff. Which is where we're getting these parallels and predictions from.
It is a very exciting time to be a Star Wars fan again!
I was wondering if they were going to go out on a limb and have a romance between Finn and Rey instead of playing it safe and having her fall for the hunk pilot, but I know theres already a ton of Finn/Poe fanfic already. I suppose it would be even more going out on a limb to have the first black stormtrooper also turn out to be gay!
I've heard that Snoke was Darth Vader, but I don't see how that is possible since not only was he killed dead, but cremated for good measure. I think Count Dookie from episode (2?) got his head cut off. Maybe Snoke is just some random bad guy.
Anyway, it's Rey and Finn 4 eva. Hot Jedi/ex-stormtrooper, uh, slowly becoming a couple...
John Boyega (Finn) said ep VIII is dark.
Maybe you might be inspired to do some furry star wars art?
As to "Who is Rey?", there are two fan theories I've heard that I like. The first is that she's actually a granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. This would add in some extra depth to some of the scenes, as they suddenly parallel Kenobi/Skywalker moments from the earlier films. Even her handing Luke the lightsaber at the end (and likely becoming his apprentice) parallels when Obi-Wan first handed Luke that very same saber.
The second theory points out that Anakin's force ghost is nowhere to be seen, when it would make sense that he'd have something to say. The theory is that the force ghosts have reincarnated by now, and that Rey is Anakin's reincarnation. Rey was left on a desert planet (Anakin hated deserts) with no family (Anakin's fall was to protect his family) as a sort of Purgatory. Many of Rey's skills seem to match Anakin's (tech know-how, ace pilot). And that would explay why the Skywalker Saber called to her, because she's the one that built it in a former life. Rey must now repair all the damage she did in her former life.
Im waiting till its on DVD or Blu-Ray to watch it so I dont need to bother with loud crowds and pricey lousy food.
I think it could've been a vision of the time where they were under luke and kylo (or whoever) murdered the other trainees (or whatever happened there)
I think it's a backstory for one of the next movies.
It could be that she's lukes daughter. But there's no way to tell currently.
About snoke... So far he's a big cg dude who sits around and trains kylo.
- - *SPOILER ALRT* - -
Rey's parents either abandoned or relinquished her, though why we don't know. Cliffhanger, so they'll probably get back to it later. Probably dead, either that or she's Luke's daughter and him and his wife, whoever that was didn't want her to know. As yet, dunno.
Seems like Disney has given it's producers total free reign to mess up..err I mean to alter the story to fit their own vision. Watch for a dance number in the next two releases.
Who is Snoke? New baddie. No info as yet.
One thing is certain, there is a new villain on the scene who TOTALLY Eclipses Darth Vader, Emeror Palpatine/Darth Sidious, and Khan combined! A new evil appears that strikes terror in the hearts of EVERY SciFi fan.....
....J.J. Abrams!
Basically, Episodes 1-7, The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, the new novels, and new comics are all that are officially canon. Everything else is part of the "Star Wars Legends" (aka: not canon.)
The unanswered questions are done so on purpose, to draw us into the adventures to come. :)
There are a LOT of fan-theories out there. Is Snoke the animated corpse of Vader? Is he Ezra from Rebels? We probably won't know until the end of 8, or a reveal in 9.
What I can't understand is how she figures out how to do the mind trick pretty much right away. Never mind that it's implied to be difficult and doesn't work on most, how the hell did she even know what it was in order to do it?
Yeah, Ren tried to read her mind, but how would that let her know she could just tell people what to do?
Also, why does Ren sword fight Finn? Finn doesn't have any force powers we know of, and Ren can outright stop people and blaster bolts in their tracks. He could have literally locked Finn in place and then chopped him in half.
Also, how the hell can Rey, who's never used a lightsaber before, beat Ren, who's trained in it from a young age. I can understand her holding her own (though Finn should have been immediately chopped in half), but not winning.
Otherwise the whole Jedi training thing is total bullshit, because you can do all the full jedi stuff just by being strong with the force. Suddenly being an apprentice is meaningless if a total newb can kick your ass right out the gate.
Also it really screws the Kylo Ren character as a villian. Rey can kick his ass, immediately, without training so he'll be totally non-threatening in the next movie.
Shit, even Luke Skywalker didn't beat Vader in the first movie, and he outright lost in the second. How scared would we be of Luke fighting Vader if, in the first movie, Luke kicked his ass after he'd just gotten his lightsaber.
And yes, I mean in the freaking mud hut on Tatooine, because that's what we're seeing.
And before we point out Rey started as a better fighter than Luke was in New Hope, Luke started the movie knowing enough about blasters and shooting, as well as piloting, that he's able to take out Storm Troopers left and right, and joins a rebellion attack on the Death Star without having gone to the academy like everyone else.
And he still didn't get into dog fights with Tie Fighters, and still didn't figure out how to use a Light Sabre till the second movie, where he got his ass kicked. He was magically good at things he'd never done in combat before and he still didn't kick the shit out of the lord of the sith on his first go, because of course he didn't!
Shit, better question, how does a girl who's lived her whole life scavenging on a desert planet with a hoverbike and a techno-stick know how to pilot the Millennium Falcon like that? At least Luke mentioned that he knew how to fly before he got in an X-wing and managed to not die and shoot a magic laser missile at a hole, while other people saved him.
My point is Rey's kinda the light side version of the sexist female lead archetype. Instead of being a useless load everyone needs to save she's magically good at everything with no explanation or training because women are just special.
Which is a huge overarching problem with female characters in that they're pretty much static, they're either weak, or ordained from birth to be special and awesome for whatever ham handed reason. They never take the Hero's journey because women are a plot device.
The best thing I can say about the whole process is that by making this kind of character the lead they can't just rely on Joseph Campbell for the whole plot like Lucas did.
No, instead they crib Lucas, for it. So of course the worst aspect of the film is delving back into George's ink well and pulling out another god damn death star?
And this one even more gigantically impossible than the already impossibly, pointlessly huge Death Star. Shit, the fucking Starkiller is an order of magnitude larger and more powerful but it still has the same weakness, to the point where Ford is almost openly mocking it in the film.
Remember when the Empire was intimidating because they could build something so massive and pointlessly cruel? Now the Empire: Neo-Nazi Boogaloo edition, just comes off as hopelessly stupid and inneffectual because of it.
I mean, this is the third god damn time! After the first two massive losses of insane resource dumps you'd figure they'd maybe not build another one, or at least put more defenses around the weak point instead of less!
It's the weakest part of the film. At this point if they felt they had to build yet another planet destroying super weapon then maybe they are not, and never were as powerful as the movies made out.
...But as for your theories, any answer speculated upon would probably be better than the actual answers, and thus lead to disappointment.
And I prefer to be surprised, like how surprised I was that I liked that train wreck- SERIOUSLY! We can't come up with anything better than another death star? You can't even save it for another movie! Come on!
Just... find some sort of ribbon, tie it in a bow and pin it to your chest. We'll call it the Meritorious Fandom Service ribbon... Wait, that sounds like a whole different kind of thing.
Whatever, clip a loonie to it, all our actors are Canadian anyway.
I figured when it got to Ren vs. Rey, Ren had a saber injury, which I just assume gave Rey a lead advantage. I also see Ren about as well trained as a petulant child, because of the above and more. The way he acts just feels like the typical hot shot that had skills where is mouth was, and always got his way, until he finally fought someone with real world experience. Maybe there's backstory not in the movie, but I see Ren as someone that has probably suffered little hardship. I figure each minor loss in the fight was a major blow to his ego, and it was very clear how he handles losing with the torture room destruction scene. I could easily see his ego dominating his sensibility in that fight leading to him losing.
Even if any of that helps justify the fight, it isn't necessarily any better for story. Where exactly do you go with a villain that's already been defeated? I don't see any of the problems necessarily getting better either. I assume VIII is going to be the "big reveal" episode, which would align it in various ways to V. I saw something at one point that I-III were all supposed to "rhyme" with IV-VI, so, one way to explain that is telling a very similar story with different characters. I certainly hope there isn't a fourth death star thing in IX.
I see the overall quality of this movie hinging severely on the rest right now. I guess that's true with all of them, but if they don't explain the Ren and Finn fight correctly, it will make me question the outcome of VII, and anything that comes after.
What is the mystery of C-3P0's arm? and Where was Poe hiding all that time?
Cybernetic Age Spots?
Turning an entire planet into a super weapon? Crumps that must have cost!
Supreme Leader Snoke is Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot and Niccolò Machiavelli, all rolled into one.
