. . . How much like hobbits the ponies are in MLPFIM? (That’s a good thing, by the way.)

The nice thing about the hobbit-archetype is that they provide a relateable perspective of a fantastic world. When you got magic, dragons and all manner of ancient mysteries around, it's good as a reader to have a grounding perspective. Not just in a "they are as baffled as the reader"-sense, but also as a reminder that this world still have people in it, who act like people and not mythic archetypes. I think a lot of fantasy miss that or try to do it, but mistake "mundane" for "uninteresting."

I think the way hobbits and MLP ponies love and care for the land goes long way toward giving them similar attitudes. That and a love for good food. Ponies don't have religion, they have cooking and baking.
