Hm, that's a good question, why do people say or think such things? I guess they see it as some kind of challenge. Of course, they want to be the ones to show their "partner" that they can not only give them all they need, but can make them only want what they can give them. In such a challenge, they forget that they should love the other for what they are and that no person is a raw material you can change into what you want to have. It is sad to see that many people still think that way. I hope my comment makes any sense.
