*sigh* Not gonna discuss politics any more among furs
9 years ago
A friendly political discussion broke out among the folks I was with on Second Life this evening. Nobody got mad, nobody threw anything, nobody left in a huff, nobody rage quit the group.
But it still left me sad, because I spent the whole time worrying that some would.
A couple of weeks ago, I lost someone I considered a good friend over the recent election. I've backed out of a group he runs because of it; if my presence makes him that uncomfortable in his own group, then for the good of that group, I'll back out. I'm not out to ruin anyone's good time.
By the same token, I believe I had good and sufficient reason for voting as I did, and I resent being told I was just casting a vote to disrupt, or because I'm any one of several epithets one side loves to throw around.
But I'll go on biting my tongue and not defending my choice. Friendships are too hard to come by, and always have been, for me. I can't just casually throw them away. Especially not in a group I'm working very, very hard to build as a refuge from all that.
So no, no more. Not here, not in SL, not anywhere furs gather.

Thing is that people only want to hear what they want to hear, and if you're not going to do that, they get upset.
I live this kind of situation everyday here at home with my parents, trying to talk with them is like trying to talk in a videogame forum: it doesen't matter how valid your points might be, they will always argue and expect to be right no matter what.
And they are especially like that when they talk about politics because my parents are like console war style fanboys, and will defend with tooth and claw "theyr" party no matter how much you try to explain that it's as faulty as the others.
I even witnessed them losing several friends because of theyr "obsession" with politics and stubborn belief "theyr" party is the only good one around, but instead of being smart as they claim to be and just avoid the argument theyr answer is "better so, THEY are a bunch of naive idiots" almost like they are talking about some war enemy.
This is why i'm done trying to talk about serious stuff with them, they don't want to listen, they only want to hear what they want to hear, so i just don't say anything and think about my opinion without spelling it out, it's not what they want to hear anyway.
Sure, they sometimes complain i "don't talk much and join the dialogue" but... oh jeez... i wonder why is that.
Still, maybe this went on too long, just letting you know that you're not the only one in this situation, i understand you very well, and you're right, this kind of argument should be avoided everytime ^^
That said, your presence does not make me uncomfortable; I cannot ask you to leave or be the cause of you leaving any of various places we both like to hang out in. I have enjoyed your company over the past several years and ultimately the loss of a friend over the political situation is a sad thing. My brother says that friendship means letting the other call one on bullshit, and not get all butt-hurt over it. If I have committed bullshit, then be my friend and call me on it.
And let's hope for the situation to calm down, which means we can talk about it objectively and without personal emotional stake.
Do as you feel is right, and thank you for putting in so much time and effort to build our little group up.
Irrelevant topics, such as who governs what, when and where are mostly irrelevant ,as peopel in a hundred years won't remember those names.
But even in 100 years, people will still be eating fries.
Are you able to to name, right out of your head, the president elect of the USA of , say, 125 years ago?
It's a shame this is what humanity does, it nice to share a viewpoint but if you don't agree to their standards, you are labeled as a freak or worse.
