hypeware?

so I've been thinking about this
when it comes to hardware, hype becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, doesn't it?
I'm clearly thinking about this subject because of the Nintendo Switch's upcoming release obviously.
but a game console is only good or bad depending on it's game lineup, we've seen so many generations where the most 'powerful' console isn't the most successful.
so if people buy into the consoles hype, bigger user base, more developers, more games, more people buying it, more user base, so on and so on.
people don't buy into it, small user base, less developers, less games, so on, so on.
with software, no matter the hype, once it's released the game can still be total garbage, incomplete, not what they were advertising, etc. I mean look at No Man's Sky, that had the biggest hype I had ever seen in forever.
but with consoles, I know that there are tons of different variables, but in the broad sense of the idea, the hype becomes real if people believe it, doesn't it?

FA+

saw an interesting idea that illustrated it perfectly earlier.
when a movie cuts to the next scene, we understand that it's either a change in time or location but the first time that ever happened in film, it must have been super jarring. now it's a given that everyone in the audience understands what it means, so film can do so much more now.
games are still developing, they don't have those kinds of rules yet and it seems that developers are starting to finally understand the connection between mechanics and narrative.
I'm super excited for the medium
yeah, I know I went on a ramble but eh, yknow :P
That said, I think there are other factors that can kill a console even if the hype is successful. For example, some consoles are just really hard for developers to work with, which usually has a negative effect on the end product. Also, if the hype sets an unreasonably high graphical standard, developers might shy away from the console entirely. (Not every company can afford an army of highly skilled artists and designers; they may be wary of a device that comes with a user expectation of hyper-realistic content.) I suspect either of these factors can limit the number of games in a console’s lineup.
Switch is basically the best-sellung console pf all time, and No man's sky isn't shit at all now
