Convention arts; ideas and merch?
HEYYY YEAH so i'm here to bug you again. I've been really into my projects lately, one of them being a dealer at FE 2018.
I'm just curious what kind of merch are you interested in? If you've had a table before, what sold the fastest/easiest?
Where can I get fully custom orders like http://inkedfur.com? Are there any artists out there that take custom orders on things like prints, or websites that print on many style of shirt? Where can I buy bulk custom stickers, or make enamel pins? Where can I get custom plushes made? Is it worth it to make your own products or to buy them pre-made/custom from a wholesale supplier?

I literally see EVERYONE wearing them at every convention im at, and its usually bought there.
Most of the ones I see are generic text, you could do one with generic furry Chibis!
I believe it's easier to have most products custom made from a supplier, especially when starting off. To make your own stickers for example, you'd have to invest in a high-quality printer, ink, sticker paper, and a die cutting machine. :(
i agree as well, if you can afford to make your own and if it's a cheaper option, by all means expand your business, but starting out, for sure you might wanna start a few steps below that XD
What sells well also depends a bit on the other sellers, if you're the only one with t-shirts they will sell incredibly well. I get my shirts from a local company, since their prices beat anything that's online + no shipping is very nice.
*Flies to Finland*
wealthguaranteed~ <3
Yeah, there are a few print shops in my town as well, i can get 11 x 17's for about 3$ each, and if I sell them for 10-20$ that's a huge profit :O So I'll look into that; thank you!
Pins and buttons are usually quite expensive to the seller since otherwise they kinda just go off a reasonable pricerange x3

ahahaha we's learnin together
there are now so many artists who's works i love, to be able to get something off of everyone.
i'm not a person with a large cash flow, so i apologise to everyone i'd love to support that there's just no way that i could.
i just have never in my life been able to afford much, so i just like seeing everyone together with what they do.
i go to conventions to see odd interesting strangeness, but also, its about as social as i am for the rest of the year.
Thank you so much for all this information, I'm... researching and observing like mad, at FE I took mental pictures and notes of everything! There was so much more people could have offered but then again IT WAS a Canadian con and Canada isn't as extravagant as other more glamorized ones. We had 1500 people at FE this year though!
THANK YOU FOR THE STICKER AND BUTTON ADVICE AAAAA
I reaaaaaaally appreciate all this, I understand what you mean aaaa ;-; this is super helpful, thank you! <3 All the little knick knacks are fine, the most expensive thing I'd have is handmade plushes or sculptures and commissions themselves... but anything that's produced in bulk I want to be affordable <3
I was at table 53! I had Rainrock up, my rainbow fursona, and also have a SPyro
the Dragon poster, and prints of Lion, Parappa the Rapper, Pikachu, Eeevee, and Spyro!
I WAS LIKE wait that sounds... really familiar LOL! i recognized your character!
I failed. xDD I am glad that I have met you then!! <3
If you meant the Furnal Equinox, then I was a dealer for the first time there this year. It was rather amazing. <3
I could answer most of your questions about the con in general so don't be a stranger!
- I get my posters from http://vistaprint.ca Mind you, shipping prices are a bit high depending on how fast you want them to get to you. Either way, it being a Canadian business
makes it more desirable for those in Canada. Their products are amazing. This does include shirts, magnets, banners, mugs, pens, sticky notes, etc
- Enamel pins are super expensive but can be made here https://www.pinprosplus.com/custom-pins/ My friend has ordered them so we will see the product soon.
- Stickers are better off made yourself. Just buy adhesive gloss paper (gloss to help the colours pop) and cut them out. That way you save a lot of money.
- Prints that are 8 x 11 I print out myself. I get gloss paper honestly and its much cheaper to deal with. The finishing products turn out nicely. <3
- Not sure where to get plushies done so I am no help there. >.<
adhesive gloss paper? cant you get that in like, holographic too? O_O I saw my friend playing around with some sort of clear plastic holographic sheet
Prints I might get done at my local print shop but I gotta be careful because their blues print out rather darkly, or my monitor sucks LOL, oooor I need to paint my pieces in cmyk?
OOooh yeah plushies are intense O_O idk where artists get them done but I am a little jealous of them!!!!!
Can you??? If you can, I never knew that and now I am stupid interested! xD Its not from Staples for damn sure then. I need to look into that.
Ahh, yeah... you should have an image to print out to test how the colours will print. The type of paper used is also important. I have never changed how I coloured my stuff on SAI. Just the paper I print on.
I am with you there. lol The jealousy is so real. xD
decks of cards (nsfw actually took a while to sell, clean ones wear gone by the time i got to the table)
Mini stand ups.
Small pictures that's big eyed and cute.
ask kadath and mui they go everywhere.
Personally, I get my 8.5x11 prints done by SixthLeafClover: http://www.sixthleafclover.com/printing/
Amazing quality, prints adult work, can ship prints directly to clients, and they come with individual sleeves and backing boards.
For shirts and things I'd probably try something like artscow.com. They print my dakis, and the quality on them is pretty great. That's the only thing I've had done by them so far but they offer dozens of other products too.
Also found this place for enamel pins and patches, I haven't looked into it too much yet but I plan on giving it a try: https://www.madebycooper.com/
1.) New comics
2.) Old comics
3.) Mini dakimakuras
3.) Shirts
4.) Daki Makuras
5.) Wall Scrolls

7.) Stickers
8.) Standees
9.) Wall scrolls
10.) One-of-a-kind sketches
11.) Prints
The more options you have available, the less appealing prints become. Your profit margin goes way up though.
* Jewellery = either make by hand, or create concept & submit to a 3D artist to have a large number produced in bulk.
* Plushies/tails/paws = create a template & make a dozen or so.
* Pants/shorts = get a few hundred printed in bulk, to sell over 2-3 conventions, if feasible.
(depends on con attendance, but everyone has shirts...)
* Big-ass mousepads - http://i01.i.aliimg.com/img/pb/626/.....585626_193.jpg - they roll up nicely too, so transport wouldn't be too bad.
(I've yet to find one that has beautiful art on it. if I saw one with ninetales or something on it, I'd pretty much stare down the dealer cowboy style, then quick-draw & frisbee my wallet into their face).
* Artist gloves - like the smudgeguard, but put cutesy-poo prints on them with inspiring/funny quotes. (It'll be like holding aspiring artist's hands?) XD
* Anything bedding-related
* Stickers > posters > original traditional pieces (the cheaper you can sell them for, the better. Probably).
From my experience at furry conventions, what sells more than anything else is CUSTOM WORKS - on the spot drawings. Illustrations, sketch book drawings, badges, etc. Merchandise at furry cons are always hits and misses ( unless it is porn related than it mostly sells ). You could have about 100 prints and only 3 sell. If you wish to sell mostly merch, definitely go to comic conventions or anime conventions.
I've seen and talked to many artists at FurFright, FE and WTFur, and they said that they sold more on demand illustrations/sketches/badges than any other merchandise. They want to hold and proudly present their original art piece they got in less than three days. Originals have more value to many than prints (IMO)
I myself try to have a small amount of merchandise at my table, but the highest sale ( 95% of the time ) that I get are for my custom badges and sketchbook illustrations. My magnets, shirts, and comics don't really sell. People are interested but mostly ask me for badges and on the spot illustration. This has been going on for more than 5 years for me.
If FE 2018 is going to be your first convention, travel light. Test the waters. Bring some prints and other small merchandise ( like one of a kind pins and other nic-naks ), but focus on the on the spot illustrations. Clients will ask if you are doing badges ( which is always a top seller at any convention ), and offer you their sketch book and ask if you do quick or full illustrations. Who wouldn't want a Falvie original?
Also, think about putting originals and prints in the art show. People will bid on your piece and you can get a nice amount.
Good luck!
UMM prints!! id love some prints from you!!!
I came on to peek at your normal painting prices and availability, and find out something even better XD
