Today was an absolute mess. Our plan was to go outside the city and surprise the encampment of Mindflayers, saving the hostage gnoll-tribe. Ark had a good idea to try scrying on them first, but I don't know any of the gnolls very well- and I certainly don't know the Mindflayers- which would have made it very difficult to find them in my mirror.
This led to our asking to search the Temple Library for alternative methods of scrying, only some great library-guardian guards it, and it doesn't like humans or halflings (can you believe it!). Duke was nominated to go in our stead, which had me worried- could Duke really understand what we were looking for well enough to find it? Anyway, he went.
Calamity of calamities, Duke finds not a great guardian, but Ashe!! Unlooked-for, the monkey-man appeared, having done something... or other... with the guardian to keep it docile. But Ashe told Duke not to look for any books, just to hurry and take the group to the Mindflayers' camp-- where he said we should lose the fight and give ourselves up!
Ridiculous! The Mindflayers want to kill us, not take us captive, or whatever Ashe is thinking. Well I wouldn't be a party to it, and told everyone so. Several of our group decided to follow Ashe's instructions anyway, but I told them I wouldn't even go with them if anyone planned to surrender. They went anyway.
Weiss seemed to believe I would follow on my own just to save everyone- I told him very clearly that I would not! Only he believed I was lying in case the Mindflayers read the party's minds. The bear is really clever sometimes, but I was telling the truth! I wouldn't risk my life to save theirs if they were just going to surrender and put their heads on the chopping block! That would be risking getting dragged into my own death as well. What a waste!
Anyway I went after them- but not to save their lives! I just wanted to help somehow, if I could... but if things turned sour I could always escape. I'm not some idealist hero!
So we arrived (me flying overhead, and invisible, just watching). Duke and Zane must have flubbed the negotiation somehow, because the Mindflayers killed two of the gnoll hostages. Predictably, a fight broke out.
And what a disaster the fight was! Everyone on the ground got Mind-Blasted and just stood there ripe for the killing. I tried to trap two Mindflayers in a Telekinetic Sphere (only got one) intending to raise them up to a fatal height and then drop them- but by this point the party was helpless and each paired off with a Mindflayer about to eat the brains out of them (a small snack in some cases, ha!).
So I had to abandon my intention to kill my trapped enemy- and instead I rolled the Sphere around the battle-site, trying to knock the Mindflayers away from my friends. It worked beautifully at first, but then they must have been ready for it because I wasn't able to dislodge them after a certain point.
Then suddenly, rather than killing everyone, the Mindflayers began Plane-Shifting away, taking my captive friends with them! Faster than I could do anything- Weiss, then Zane, then Duke all vanished and were borne away heaven-knows-where! With Michael and Sam off somewhere, and the bull away somewhere else, that left only myself and Ark to determine what to do next.
Only one Mindflayer remained, trapped in a tanglefoot bag Duke had thrown. Then suddenly Ashe appears (again!) though this time with no memory of his first meeting with Duke. He brought some sort of awful rectal-insertion mind control mess, "two feet of sausage" he said, though it sounded like some primitive druidic nonsense... hang it all, now I want sausage. Anyway Ashe claimed after shoving that mess up the Mindflayer's arse, it would help us.
Anyway "You have to let this Mindflayer take you both into another plane" says Ashe, presumably to meet our other friends. But I'm not sure I like the idea. Surrendering to Mindflayers is exactly what I refused to do originally- and it hardly seems better to be ripped from my native plane than to be killed outright. Who knows what awaits us? If I even go, that is.
