Building a base pack!?
Hey guys! So, if any of you are like me and enjoy using base packs for character references, adopts, or just to sit and paint to pass time because its relaxing, then you probably understand my frustration. There are lots of base packs out there, lots and lots. But most of them are either:
A) Overpriced!
Like a base pack with cat, dog, and bunny as an option and nothing else! For $25. Really?
B) Horrid line art.
You know those chopy, uneven, ugly lines you have to fix yourself before you can make something that looks decent? Yeah, those.
C) Lack options!
Were talking those packs that have 4 species and nothing else. Most of the time canine and feline are the main two! But what about all our otter friends? Or the avians! And the options they have are limited even then. What about short muzzled dogs? Floppy ear dogs? Many packs don't have them!
So! I will be taking matters into my own hands and building my own base pack! With lots and lots of options. Are you a hyena? A raptor? An eagle? An elephant? Don 't worry, there will be options for you!
But! I want to hear from you guys.
What kinds of things do you look for in a base pack? What kinds of things do you think should be added? NSFW options? Certain Species? Back view? Comment below and help me out! <3

for dongers.. knotted, sheathed, horse, horse sheath, slitt, slitt housed cock.. feminine slit.. maybe udders covering the groin..
various heads, from all the common species.. hair? ears? horns? frills?
and tails? a lot of animal tails are very different. although you should be able to do things like.. use a bovine tail for a lion as they share the same looks.
as nice as a back view is, the simplest would be just having the single front view.
the trouble with bases like they are.. is you want to try to be as general as you can be. it takes a lot of time making all these different versions that fit on the bases (or custom per base)
as line art is something im not great at, its nice to use bases even if i have to do minor edits or add a couple new lines. i certainly wouldn't attempt to make my own, so i applaud you for it! so yea, thats just what i can sum up now, id love to try and assist further in the making of this base. its a great idea!
By the way! I just threw up an art raffle for my birthday and you can have an extra entry for weighing in on this journal! :)
you can always expand the art pack by adding back view. id probably focus on the front view, just to get it done sooner.
oh! and i forgot to mention wings! feathered, bat, demonic, draconic.. small, big.. all things to think about.

As an above poster listed, there are a lot of options for species...and that's only a few! There's so many more.
Create your general base blank first, then pick a genus species to start with. It's really easy to burn yourself out on a project if you try to bite off more than you can chew, like, say, trying to draw all the ears for all the creatures in one go. And then realizing at the end you missed something back on layer 2 and now they're all wonky.
The nice thing about wanting to do so many options, though, is that if you just can't cat today, maybe canine will be better. Or if you're hell-bent on practicing feet today...you've got a lot of options on which to practice.
Now for some technical advice:
Labeling your layers will be your truest, greatest friend. Sit down and figure out how you want your folders organized and your layer naming convention before you begin. This way you can quickly navigate to parts that might need a small fix you only just noticed working on something else. It also makes checking off sections of layers easier when you're hunting for the one that has 3 pixels off in left field that are driving your inner perfectionist crazy!
I would keep a notepad (physical or digital) that has your master list of everything that you need to do, likely organized by body part or species. After you're done arting for the day, go to that document and check off what you've done. This gives you a quick overview of what still needs completing, and gives you the freedom to work on different things at different times without the worry of forgetting where you left off if you really just can't cat for a week.
Save, save, SAVE! Save frequently, and not just in the file...save versions. The undo command only has so much history, and while sometimes having to go back to a version an hour old hurts from the progress lost, it could save you hours more of trying to undo this thing you did 45 minutes ago that's messed up all of said progress.
It will also save you in the event that your art file corrupts. A lot of art programs are resource-intensive and are prone to crashing. Or something beyond your control might happen that crashes your computer suddenly (power surge, rampaging toddler, desk weasels...you never know). Sometimes, they take your art file with them when they go. Having a previous version to fall back on is a lifesaver.
If your computer doesn't have the greatest amount of free memory, you can delete older versions as you go, too. I normally try to keep at least 5 versions of anything that's going to take multiple hours/days/weeks to complete. I also keep those 5 working versions on at least 3 different memory devices...My main drive, my art-specific drive, my external oh-shit! drive, and sometimes even a few flash drives. I'm totally not paranoid! (I'm paranoid...)
Hope some of this was helpful, and sorry for it being long-winded!
And well honestly, hair options. So many bases are great but lack any and all hair variety. Some of us can't do lineart at all, so it kinda blows. But given you are talking about variety I'm sure this is already a thing :p
Although something I never have seen? Premade markings. Tiger Stripes, various animal spots, those kinds of things. I would so recreate all my tiger gals on that base. An idea might be have the markings go over the entire base instead of just fitting to feline parts, leaving the use to erase, so they can have even more customization. A tiger dragon? They could do it without much hassle that way.
Some body variety is also worth consideration, split up by breast size and like skinny, normal, chubby, THICC sorta options. A few bases do this, and it's quite nice.
If there's males, please anything but only Femboy and Beefcake. Nothing against those, but they are about the only two males you see, or that I can find bases wise and such. I mean of course consider them as options, there are reasons femboys are the most common males I see.
A backview is pretty useful I'd say. Maybe a headshot as well, although I can understand if not, could be tons of work.
I think that covers it for feedback and such I had, hope it helps, even a bit~
Even nicer is when the layers have already been done in a way that allows you to just color without worrying about going outside the lines. I'm new to photoshop so I don't know what that's called or how to do it. But what takes the longest is trying to keep inside the lines first before filling in the rest of the flat color (like cutting in a room if you have ever painted a house). This is common on flat images that are not a psd full of layers. Of course, maybe I just need to learn how to use photoshop better.
Lastly, more hair and tail styles are always a great thing. Bases that have only one seem more like "color my character" instead of make your own.
Good luck. I'd recommend staring with a few species and styles and then adding more over time. So you don't get burned out and end up with an unfinished file full of 37 hair styles and no legs.
Don't fret too much about your line art. Your's is good, so you shouldn't waste too much time on it.
Variety in species. All I've really seen has been wolves and felines, so some more exotic or uncommon options would be nice. Like Sergals or red pandas would be dope seeing as they are two characters that I love.
male and female characteristics. trying to be uni-sex doesn't really appeal to me because it either looks too male for female characters, or too female for male characters
hats, clothing, jewelry, and accessories are always nice.
variety in poses. all I've seen has been overly stoic or overly happy faces and nothing in between.
