Fursuit makers! I has questions.
Hey everybody!
I'll keep it short, and I'm looking at what is and isn't possible on fursuits and trying to design what I want out of one as I save up. But.
1. Is it possible to have...uh, beard scruff? Like, patchy mustache basically? That's darker than the rest of the fake fur? I imagine you'd just leave some parts longer than others and then dye them, but I dunno.
2. Are feet paws super flat, and is the interior open and roomy or like a shoe? I was thinking I'd need gel inserts.
3. How do moving jaws work mechanically? Chin strap or something? I'm not sold on having one but I can't figure out how that works. D:
That's all for now. I'll be saving up for one over half the year. :o

feet generally have shoes as the base
and moving jaws can be done a number of ways depends on the maker
But then so can soles. *shrugs*

Would they just sew in a patchy colored fur for the mustache and shave down the longer wrong color fibers? It's not a full stache, so I'm not sure how they'd best accomplish that...or if it's possible.
Good to know that it's very plasticy for fibers. I've dyed fabrics before, but know any of the artificial fibers like rayon, polyester, modal, etc, they need pretty special dyes and getting them to set is a pain in the ass. Also, vinegary smells. :\
Also, thank you for explaining the jaw strap, and thank you for replying. You were very helpful and informative.
I'm thinking I'm going to have to just buy a small amount of faux fur, similar make up to what suit makers use, and then test small squares of it with different dying techniques. Synthetic fibers are naturally water resistant or whicking, so getting the dye into them is tricky. Alcohol is sometimes used, but heat is the best as it opens up the "pours" of the fibers to allow the dye inside. And while direct/dry heat can melt the fur, a wet heat is less problematic as it distributes the heat better. I may be able to get away with steaming the fur with a steamer used to remove wrinkles in clothes to get the dye in the fibers.
All science stuff! But it'll be fun when I do it. I have a manager at my work who used to dye stuff all the time and knows a lot about fibers and fabrics and things. :D
As for the sharpie thing, I've heard of that and acrylic ink, but both will absolutely rub off. This idea came from people trying to cheaply and easily dye wigs. It does not work! It will rub and flake off over time, and you risk staining things! Alcohol will also easily remove sharpie. I used to use it a lot to clean things. Takes it right out.
