An Open Letter on Reminders
7 years ago
Hello artists.
FA policy "allows" you to post reminders on something you're selling every 4 hours. Usually that means you delete a reminder and post it up again.
Just because they allow it does not mean you should do it unless you want to run the risk of losing possibly paying customers from being unwatched. Perhaps you make enough money and don't need new business -- that's awesome and congratulations -- you can ignore this post and I wish you the best.
Here's some food for thought;
1. If I've seen the original posting in my submission list and decided I was not interested, then every time you post a reminder, you're putting it in my face again.
2. If you delete a reminder and repost it before I see it, it has moved from the top of my submission list down to the bottom because it is new again.
For the first, you risk annoyance.
For the second, you risk me not even seeing it because I may have 100s of submissions to go through and stop looking before I get down to your new post. But since I will have already seen the original (see #1) you again risk annoyance if I do see it.
I get why you do it.. you want people to see it on the front page for the 10 seconds that it will appear there. That's the only benefit I can see to constantly reposting a reminder image.
But how about this. Make a new account -- one that nobody will watch -- and post your spam reminders from that account. They will appear on the front page and that's that. From your main account you can delete and post reminder journals all you want because I have no way of knowing who wrote and deleted a journal. But posting reminder images constantly I will certainly notice and depending on how many you do and how often, I will re-evaluate whether I want to continue watching you.
I'm not saying don't do it at all -- I'm fine with maybe once a day. But if I get to where I'm having to remove your spam every time I look at my sub list.... nope. Into the bin you go, with all the best wishes I can muster, but none of my art budget.

So, I agree.. it's irritating enough to warrant an unwatch and I've actually had this discussion with a few people who found the same irritation with the same repeated posts that I have.
I do YCH's -- and at the risk of sometimes not advertising ENOUGH, I sometimes lose out on a bit of exposure just for the pure fact that I don't want to piss people off. If I have people buying my work because they enjoy what I can do for the prices I'm offering it at, it'll sell. Spamming messages doesn't help anybody.
Hell, I'm on every day and sometimes I feel odd if I post more than a few journals over a few days -- I know most people don't mind especially if it's different content in each one but I have this built-in aversion to spamming people with stuff because it's a respect thing -- don't assume your watchers are idiots who'll respond well to seeing something 100 times repeated and you'll get along much better. Respect goes a long way.
