Nom Go Sleep
July 2009 life was different. I wasn't quite so old. I had a bf.
One time when said bf was visiting, we went to a local pet store to get crickets or a new heat lamp bulb for the dragons or something - and saw a pitiful little albino garter snake in the reptile display. It was no thicker than a Q-Tip handle and maybe 8 inches long at most. It was sitting there, looking up at me all pathetic. Flicking its little tongue out asking me to rescue it from that shop. I then had a snake.
We spent more than a week trying to pick a name with a whiteboard full of options. I think the short list in the end was either String or Nom. We chose Nom from the way s/he ferociously tried to clamp down on food.
I can't say that Nom had a wonderful life - s/he did even less than the dragons. Slithered around the aquarium. Drank water or fished for minnows that we'd occasionally put in the water dish. Ate small baby mice. Slept a lot. I think. Snakes don't close their eyes. But I'd like to think life was good, by snek standards.
Information says common garter snakes live 4-5 years in the wild, and twice that in captivity. So for Nom to make it to 11 is good, I suppose. And Nom was not common -- s/he was an albino.
Go hang with the dragons, Nom -- we'll catch up later.
