I have a feeling this answer matches with a lot of things people will say. But still! I want to be convinced!

If you ask me, I think some of the membership is just people doing it to be funny, and most of the remainder is people who already believed in other science-denial theories all coming together. After all, a belief in the flat Earth gives a common ground (har har) to the people who are literalists about the Bible as well as the people who deny the moon landing for other reasons.

Well, I'd say it's almost impossible (and undesirable) to have science that is not driven by emotion. As an entomology professor once told me, "It would be pathological for me to dedicate my life to studying bugs, but not care about climate change and species diversity."
