At no point was this cited as an official study, people do things for fun FYI. The assumption that the community is tailored to a gay audience is a common stereotype perpetuated among my peer group. You have a better reason to be offended if I were stating it as fact.

Still, your use of the word 'study' makes it come off as if there's some legitimate science behind it when it's literally just a strawpoll, whether or not you meant it that way.

And it's a common assumption because it sure as hell SEEMS like gay content gets the most appreciation on FA. I don't see gay pics getting "if only the bottom were a girl" nearly as much as I see "I wish they were both guys". You might get a better read if you separate bi out into male, female and no preference options.

The bigger problem is that the sample is non-random. I think furries are incapable of understanding random samples. EVERY fucking furry survey is non-random, despite there being no methdological obstacle to it

Dude. The furry fandom has changed—more than once, in fact. For a long stretch it really was primarily made up of gay males, and that was the general understanding. Now it's a bit more mixed according to the 'official' furry survey (https://en.wikifur.com/wiki/Furry_Survey ), but some of the old status still sticks in the minds of anyone who isn't a johnny-come-lately. In addition, the terms "thesis" and "study" which you apply here were not used whatsoever. Perhaps you're the one making unfounded assumptions.

Their results pretty much indicated the same thing-most furries are bi, then straight and then a mix of different preferences. The reason being ever since it started this fandom was more open to people who identified other than straight which led to a lot of non-straights becoming part of the community just because it was more accepting than anywhere else.

The reality is that humans in general are actually Bisexual. From their they just lean more towards one end of the spectrum based on a wide array of factors such as social pressure, the time of year/month, the smell of those around them, their hormone levels, etc.

I don't know about the reading comprehension part but I don't think as well there is a dead end with those who are heterosexual, bisexual, or gay. I don't think none of us are asexual

Humans are mutations by our very nature. It's the result of evolution. Genes mutate for the sake of adaptation. In regards to asexual ACE people do indeed exist.

That really hasn't been proven conclusively though. There is still a lot of research needed to be done because we're still at a point where being open about what you are is heavily stigmatized. Plus social factors like being considered a certain preference being the 'cool' thing interfere with that kind of study. There's a lot more work that needs to be done before 'bi' being the default is considered definitive. You're also leaving out that there are a lot more sexualities than just bi. I do think people are becoming more comfortable with the idea of being something other than gay/straight/lesbian/bi which is cool. Hopefully we'll get to a point where it doesn't matter. Where everyone respects you no matter who or what you are as long as you're not hurting anyone.

It really depends where you live. I grew up in the suburbs and have known I was bi (pan, now) since I was a kid. The home I grew up in was by no means religious but I knew if I came out my aunt would disapprove and want me to keep it hush hush. She was very much about keeping appearances. The Baptist church I went to with a friend when the topic came up (the rare times it did) it was always spoken of in hushed voices. We were considered mentally ill and by many in the US still are. I see hate and vitriol online whenever there's a discussion about the LGBT community. Just try bringing up gay characters in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic over on the Equestria Daily forum and you'll see it there for sure.

Worse is places like Russia...Jamaica...Africa...there are so many places where they're not as accepting and while a lot of it has to do with religion mostly it's ignorance and fear. Any time 'the way things are' faces such a huge shift in perspective you're going to get people who have trouble adapting and/or who feel threatened by it.

Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better...if they ever do. All that social progress is starting to snap back.

I can't help raising an eyebrow at the fact you immediately equate being LGBT with sex even though you don't immediately equate showing straight couples to showing sex. What about kids shows that show romance between straight characters? Because there are tons of examples of hetero relationships being shoved into LGBT kids heads as being the norm and nobody complains about that.

Showing healthy romantic relationships between mares and mares and stallions and stallions shouldn't be a big deal. We have same sex marriage in the US. We have same sex adoption. Why if we've finally begun to accept that as normal (which it is) would it be wrong to show same sex characters in a kids show? Is that not a part of young kids lives? How is it any different from showing them hetero relationships? What about kids who are LGBT? Don't they get characters and stories to identify with?

Because not including that kind of thing sends a pretty negative message.

There's nothing wrong with adoption and you're pretty much stigmatizing it by what you're saying. Both adoption and IVF are perfectly valid methods of getting pregnant. Sure-they're not genetically yours but it's not genetics that make someone family. Your kid doesn't need to be related for you to love them or for them to be a family. That and plenty of people adopt. Saying 'most' people don't want to look after someone's kid not only are you making an assumption without providing statistics you're-again-stigmatizing adoption. Considering i was adopted I take issue with that.

It's not about hidden or not, it's about the kind of person who would jump at the chance to let their point of view or preference be known, and how that systematically biases the sample towards them because the survey is open to volunteers. In this case "I'm here to prove not all furries are gay! Look how bisexual I am!".

You solve this by not letting participants decide if the participate or not, just like you fix selection bias by not letting the researcher decide who participates. Hence you get a random sample, and not volunteers. For example, if you were at a con, you could give the survey to every 10 people who show up at con registration after starting with a random person

None science data will be perfect , regardless what you think and selection bias there wont be better furry data out there, not to say its not just about "sex" and preferences if you actually seen the survey itself. this is as close to science data about furries you can get and since its from 2011 it already tells how hard is to do any statistics around furries as despite so many years , there is no better science data about furries

While "selection" bias may have some role in the statistic you cant gather better data , cons are simply too small and even if you gather data there you have "con bias" becouse only specific type of furies go to cons , and whole "this data is not valid become Y or Z"

This isn't methodologically challenging at all. Random samples at cons would be easy to collect, and the only thing you would need to do it on websites would be an userlist. Random samples are the foundation of any statistically valid survey, and the logic of why a survey is valid is built on that. If you can't get a random sample, there's really no point in doing the survey at all

problem is random samples would be incredibly hard to gather as not everyone at "con" would like to fill these in and you would again get "volunteer bias" it does not change that much

not to say even if we could consider these who go to con "most accurate representation of furries" how big cons are? 250 people? 500? that statistic you so want to trash had over 8000 furs

Only certain people go to cons(i know a lot people who will never go , and these who went have very bad experiences with creepy furs) so i would not say that "convention furries" are NOT best representation of the fandom

-You will still have these who specific will go to "fill survey"
-we are internet minority , you wont go around street asking "random furries" because furries wont be "there"

so if these 50 people by statistic anomalies all were gay furries you would probably say "all furries are gay , science!" even if these 50 people was most accurate statistics gathered even in perfect scenario it would be statistic insignificant

34 data points is enough to do statistics. The whole point is that (assuming the standard social science p value of 0.05), 95% of the time you draw a random sample, the average will be between x and y range. A larger sample allows you to narrow down that range within the same p value.

If your sample isn't random, then you have a substantive problem with the data. The whole idea is that random sampling will even out the errors in the data(for any unforseable variability), and any given sampling will typically be within a specific range because the errors typically cancel each other out. If there is selection or self selection in your data, then it can be argued that it is not random, and you will bias the data in the direction of self selectors.

If you get an 8000 person sample of biased data, you have a very exact wrong estimate. All you are doing is narrowing the range of a sample that is faulty. It is better to me closer to a representative sample and be less precise, than to be completely off and be very precise

Except conventions are worst place to gather such data and you not told any other alternatives "how furry statistics" could be gathered beyond "me suggesting internet"

You're shooting for precision with sample size, not accuracy. For accuracy, you need randomness and representation. You can't fix the accuracy problem with size or any statistical techniques. This is a problem of how you are collecting the data. This reads like you are applying statistical methods from other fields into social science, and the standard for social science is a randomized sample.

And a 34 data point sample at worst would just give you very wide ranges, it is not a substantive problem. Volunteers is. A 8000 person non random sample is a very large waste of time and any social scientist would have stopped it before it got that far

Explain how exactly you would make "random sample" in furry fandom because you have "these who go to conventions" and "these who never go to conventions because creepy furs fo there to have group sex" gathering it just at conventions would be gathering worst statistical data ever.

Call it a scientific survey of furries who go to conventions, then do a separate survey of users of furry sites to see if there's any difference. You can do surveys of any place furries gather and do a meta-analysis if you want. Even if you limit the scope of the survey, good sampling matters more.

You eliminate volunteer bias by letting luck decide who is asked. If participation rate is low, you pay them. On the internet, you get a userlist, randomly select some users, and do the same thing. You could even use third party services for it. These limitations are nothing social scientists haven't dealt with before. But non-random sampling is just a complete non-starter for validity in a survey, and no amount of volume or statistical tricks can fix it.

Trans is indeed a gender identity and not a sexual orientation. The sexual orientation to non-CIS gender identities is skoliosexual. There are more trans-identified and skoliosexual identified individuals than you think, even in the furry community... there were a bunch at FurTheMore for instance. :3

I feel more questions would have been asked as to what skoliosexual means/is. Trying to define that would be a controversy in of it's own. For what it is, it doesn't seem to be garnering enough votes anyway to effect the results as a whole.

I mean, it shows in the art here on FA alone. There's a MASS of MxM porn here in comparison to anything else. Not saying that that's damning evidence, but it is odd that there's SO MUCH of it compared to everything else.

I think the results of this poll show that it's plausible that it's not necessarily that the community is gay, but that both sexes really like to see M+M content.

My sexuality is messed up anyway. I used to believe I was asexual for like 10 years because whenever I fall in love, I fall in love for someone's personality and not for sexual interest. Some cases of sexual abuse in my child years ruined me to the point that I can't enjoy sexual activities with a partner like healthy people.

I mean I feel a very similar way in which I can only find people attractive if they have an attractive personality, that can be considered demisexual.

All the extra labels would seriously muddy up the results of the poll so best to keep it simple with just bisexual.

I normally associate as pansexual since I'm a non-binary person that's in a relationship with a non-binary person.

I honestly think this is a tough call since there are so many people. From all the art I can see I say a lot of the community is Bi. There are those that are gay and then you have people like me who are straight.

Big debate up top. Lost interest in reading it (I'm like 99% asleep and will kill if it gets me rest), but the point of the matter is a common assumption is that the fandom is just a bunch of gay guys. You obviously know the rest of the stereotypes regarding looks and fetishes, but I've seen a lot of people assume this. Granted, it's only ever been non-furs and you know how most of them react, so the term gay may just be used in a slander form, but you get the point.

Also, me, male pansexual who would prefer to be able to freely change gender (not sure what this classes as, but I just accept the cards I was dealt biologically). Partially for sex reasons, mostly cos women get WAY more options regarding appearance. Both less and more stigma, weirdly. I like being a guy, but being a girl would help appearance issues...

My genderfluidity only really applies to fiction at this point. :P I like the idea of swapping them out, along with the parts they come with, but naturally reality and biology stops this. So I class myself as male given my birth gender, sticking to it as a sex change would remove my ability to have kids.

So, I guess I'm genderfluid but just not actively? If that makes sense? All I know is gender never bothered me, which reflects in my sexulaity.

The study I've found states that the community is only about 38% gay, but only 40% straight.
I myself am bi-curious, though as time goes by, i'm leaning more and more towards pansexual.

Trans isn't a sexuality. There are only two sexes. Trans is more of a cross dressing and genital mutilation fetish.

Also, there are a lot of other studies out there where exclusively gay people will say they are "bi" to avoid the gay stereotypes and being socially outcast for said stereotypes.

In regards to sexuality the "kinsey scale" test is usually the best, but like any study, people have to be honest for it to work. ^_^

People are surprised that the furry community ISN'T mostly gay and is leaning more towards bi? I guess I really was the only one who noticed the absolutely massive influx of herm porn over the last few years.

I am not at all surprised at the BI bent of the fandom . Of course, this is actually only a poll on individuals who watch this account, not the fandom in general, but yeah. Most things I have seen put the whole fandom at about equal percentages Hetrosexual and Homosexual, and the largest portion (but still no where near 50 percent) BI. Been that way for a long time now. This poll is slightly more gay/bi bent, but, again that's your followers.

I was straight for years and years, but I voted bi. (TBH I wish there had been a 'bi-curious/heteroflexible option' As I vastly like females and herms...guys are okay if femboish and dominant...but...*ahem* anyways.)
