From what I have watched over the past few years, more and more people are drifting off of FA, or they just are no longer as interactive as they once where. A lot of people try to blame the con seasons, but this has become a year round thing now.
I mean, I am by no means the best artist out there, but I used to have a steady flow of faves and comments, and now, its pretty slim on either. What used to warrant 40 + faves in a day, usually never reaches past 13 in a two week time, and comments are usually only limited to those that I work with a lot, or talk to outside of commissions.
Someone I know made a valid point at one time though. FA get's new users daily, and most of them, are younger then those that used to comment, and are part of a tech generation where commenting much on things that dont pertain to them, is pretty much non exsistant. Same with faving. If it's not specific to them, then its not as interesting to take time to respond to.
I see the above as a sort of 50/50 though. I think part of it could be the newer way of thinking when it comes to online habits, but I also think its because FA has hit a lot of people with drama and most prefer to stay out of the 'limelight' of it all.
But I have noticed a lot of artist and art in general getting fewer faves, less comments, and less interaction all around in the past two years. o.0
I keep holding out that it will swing back up though ^^
I agree with Sythra, people are drifting for sure, I am not a popular artist but sometimes I would get a comment here or there, and I notice that from artists I watch their past art got sooo many views and now they dont get as many?
I too hope it swings back up tho I miss the liveliness

What you say about the younger generation is true though. Social interaction, in general, is on the decline.
