Off the bat- I LOVED IT.
Do NOT listen to online reviews, yes yes YES I know the animals look rough but dang- they are to represent WILD animals that live in the WILD- not healthy zoo-kept plushies from the Disney version. The jungle is hot and full of bugs- and lots of scenes had animals surrounded by flies.... because well it IS the jungle after all.
Also the CGI wasn’t that damn bad.
VERY MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD:
If one can ignore/handle the obvious human eyes/facial expressions on the animal characters.. Funny I should mention this considering where I’m posting this journal, but some reviews online complained about the anthro-faces of the characters (rolls eyes).
This is the FIRST representation of Shere Khan that I felt actual fear and tension (the scene when he laps water turning it red from the blood covering his mouth). No sassy talking proud talking kitty here- this tiger has ISSUES. He hates man... We all know this. But what he’s doing is creating chaos and imbalance within the jungle (hunting man’s cattle and man himself is a big no-no) basically stressing everyone.
Also he has a sniveling aardwolf side kick :-D
Baloo isn’t a shuffling singing happy go lucky bear- he’s OLD and been through some ghastly battles. Bagheera was far more fleshed out in this version than the Disney version. In fact I’d go along and say this movie is like the classic “Chuck Jones” version of Jungle Book. I hadn’t read the books, so there’s that.
Kaa.... Omg Kaa. The python is a female and that sweet face of hers- its anthropomorphic and just adorable. And though she’s a snake, who seem to AWAYS have a bad rap in ANYTHING, is portrayed as a anthro-snake character would behave (imao). She’s not evil. She like everyone in the jungle wants peace. But Shere Khan created chaos causing everything to go awry, no thanks to his selfish sick tiger indulgences (no offense to the civilized tigers reading this).
The wolves. These are Indian wolves, with short fur coats. I swear the momma wolf reminds me of my dog’s sister. Sweet innocent expression that makes you want to bop her nose and give cuddles. And POOR ol’ Boot!!! I think that was his name, he was very dog-like (note the curled tail).
Mowgli. He was what a human raised in the jungle would look like- if one was to survive. Rough, dirty and brutally scarred. There’s more to his character, lots more, but that ending was awesome.
INSUMMATION: Watch it for yourself. Its NOT nearly as bad as people make it out to be, since everyone is still reflecting on Disney’s live action version. Fun fact, this version was to be released into theaters, but Disney gotten theirs out first because they got the $$$$$$ to push it out sooner, thus the Netflix release and select theaters. My question is how they gonna do a live action “Lady and the Tramp” (yes, that’s gonna be a thing). Last live action Disney doggy movie was 101 Dalmatians, and they were regular dogs O.o;

your mentioned scene with Shir Khan reddening the water while drinking shows up in the original book. there was a drought threatening wildlife, and the watering hole was declared neutral territory, yet the tiger decided to hunt someone nearby, and had the guts to show it to the rest...
also, Kaa used to be a wise teacher in the books, full of stories and advice.
hm, I'm not into netflix, but maybe they release it here on DVD. I think I'd enjoy this version of jungle books. :)
there is an animated series long ago produced by eastern-german UFA Studios, which is also very close to the original. Bagheera even appears to be female there, and the stories are more serious and gritty. if you can grab it, go for it! :)
Far as Netflix, I am sure it's already (this movie) is somewhere online by now. Any and everything on Netflix is tossed online.
But the movie title is "Mowgli, legend of the forest" and here's a trailer for those who are curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVBjPpUlQrE
So far lots are saying this is better than Disney's Jungle book, for being 'closer to the book', grittier, darker, and NOT for kids.
Good to hear Kaa was awesome in the book. Poor danger noodles always get the bad rap in anything in movies/television, like rats.
I think mister Khan just needs a tiger buddy. He's PAINFULLY lonely lol.
Thanks for the tip! I will be on the look for it!
hm, that's not an aardwolf. looks more like a regular indian hyena.
and they crippled shir's forepaw... I seem to remember from the books that he walks with a limb on a hind leg, when a hunter's bullet got stuck... but either way it explains his hatred.
the animal faces need some getting-used-to, but how else are you to create human-like expressions on faces that don't even have a mimic? :)
True! The faces are easily acceptable after a short while.
I try to keep in mind these are wild rough living animals- and clearly the jungle like is a hard one. Baloo is old, very old and teacher of the wolves (they had a dramatic test all the wolf pups and Mowgli had to perform). Hearing more on Bagheera's backstory near the end, the emotion shared between him and Mowgli was beautiful. But be forewarned... the albino wolf pup named 'Bhoot'... OMG I am still having a rough time with that one. Poor fella. I know its CGI and all... but darn!
I give this movie a five talon rating!
RIP BHOOT!!!!
