2018

This was the year I lost people. There were funerals and family reunions and a big trip to Alaska and more funerals. There were bright spots too, there was joy. I had to come out of cold storage and I had to get a second job, but I did everything I set my mind to. Life is good.
There were moments up in the cold cold ocean near Glacier Bay when it seemed like the sea was alive with orcas and sea otters and everything that should not be there in such a bleak place. But the whales breached and never slept and they never stayed in one place. All day you could watch that boundless sea and out of nothing the surface would part and a black shape would spout and tail flukes would emerge and they were there all along.

People wondered why I went up to Alaska in the summer fishing with Dad in the 80s, it wasn't for the money... Trolling you are lucky to make about 2 bucks an hour on a 10% crew share... I enjoyed the beauty and peacefulness at the end of the day... From time to time you hear the wolves howl and see them on the beach. Then you have the bears that roam the beach... Watch them lift up a rock to get at the small crabs under it. Later you go ashore and find out that rock is about 1/3 the size of a VW Bug!
Life is teaming up there... some times you have to slow down to see it. Glad to hear you enjoyed your time up home.
Here's to a better 2019.
But Alaska, thats the last state for me to visit, #2 on my Bucket list. I'm envious there. You got to see orcas and whales breaching before you. That alone is a 12 on a scale of 1-10.
Hopefully you didn't play with any bears or camp out in a derelict bus by a river.
