Films: Tolkien and Detective Pikachu
6 years ago
4th of June, 2019, I went to movies twice on the same day. Reason for that was that I had some gift tickets that were about to expire. So I chose two films to see: Tolkien and Pokemon Detective Pikachu.
And uh, here's my two cents on those films, spoiler-free.
On Tolkien;
If there's a director who is especially good at making humane stories, it's Dome Karukoski. I'v seen a couple of his films, like Tom of Finland and the director has a good sense of what is most humane part of that story. And the scenes of World War I on the battle of Somme, it's just pure gold with images that remind you of Peter Jackson's films of Lord of the Rings and classical tales he heard and read.
Overall, a story with a heart of gold. 4 stars.
On Detective Pikachu
I did not know what exactly to expect from this film, but I was pleasantly surprised. Of course it had it's hollywood cliches, which thankfully were downgraded to a more credible level. Plus a lot of stuff was clearly aimed at the audiences that saw the very first Pokemon film, back in childhood of very late 90's and early 2000's.
A good, surprisingly good story with some interesting twists.
3 and half stars.
