My thoughts on the new Smash DLC
"Call Twilight Sparkle... shit's about to get magical!"
So moving along from Pokemon, I do wanna touch on the Smash DLC that got announced.
Looks like it was a win-win for both eastern and western fans of Smash with Banjo and Kazooie for the west and the Hero from Dragon Quest for the east.
Now, I will confess, I've never played the Banjo-Kazooie games and only ever played the original Dragon Warrior on the NES. However, I do know a lot about both. Banjo-Kazooie started their life on the N64 and both it and the sequel are very well loved by many fans. Dragon Quest is the BIGGEST RPG series in Japan. No, seriously, they HAVE to release the new games on either a holiday or weekend because people literally call-out JUST to stay home and play the game.
As for the characters?
The Hero looks pretty cool. He looks to be a mix of Link and the Mii Swordfighter. His big difference is that he has an MP gague and several magic spells he can charge up and use. In addition to having a skin for the main character from 11, he also has skins for the heroes of 3, 4, and 8. Now, we know he has a stage modeled after 11 and hes getting DQ music, but don't expect more than 2 tracks. This is due to the composer of the DQ series being a little... polarizing. I'm not expecting and new spirits or even art for the Fighter Spirits of the Hero. If they didn't do it for Cloud, why would they do it now?
That aside, really looking forward to the Hero.
As for Banjo and Kazooie? Sadly, I'm not as versed in their games as I am with DQ, but I still welcome them to Smash as DLC because they deserve it. Also, the dispute between them and Steve from Minecraft was getting really old. I expect they'll get treated better content-wise than the Hero will.
So, that's about all I can say about the new DLC. After this, I'm not even sure what to expect. First Joker, and now this? The last 2 fighters have their work cut out for them.

Since both Banjo and Steve are Microsoft reps, people started debating who would get in.
...and it got pretty heated too.
banjo at least has backing as originating on nintendo consoles, so youre appeasing a huge audience by letting them in.
plus BK is easier to turn into a unique fun character.
learn somethin new every day
Sora is on the bubble now with the Hero being in.
Ragna? Hmm... I gotta say a Namco fighter like Jin or Heihachi would be picked over since it would be another Namco rep to go with Pac.
Kratos? I dunno either.
seeing another Square representative with Dragon Quest is a bit of a surprise considering said stinginess, so it's kind of a mystery why they're being like this
that said, I only played Dragon Quest 8 and intend to get 11 once it's out while taking my time catching up on the older titles
Banjo's also a pleasant surprise, but at the same time not too surprising considering how cozy Microsoft has been with Nintendo these days
No online mode was okay when I was a kid and friends just came over to play. But know they live in different towns, states and even countries. I so wanted to love this game like I loved Melee snd Brawl.
While I appreciate the effort that went into World of Light, it still doesn't live up to Melee's adventure mode or SSE. And, yes, the lack of All-Star and HRC are disappointing (though I hear it may get added at some point as an update).
So yeah, I love Ultimate, but it wouldn't have killed them to give it an extra month or two to add in some more stuff.
...still love it to death though.
SSE was really great gameplay with cool cutscenes. It really gave a feeling that the world of Smash Bros is connected. Before SSE I didn't know I want a story mode in SSB.
Another feature I miss from the previous game is the character customisation. I hoped they would expand it even further and allow different smash attacks instead of just special moves. Wanted to play a beefy Pikachu or a fast as shit Ganondorf? No probs, you could do that. But instead they scraped the whole thing except for the Mii characters. A bit of customisation is still possible with spirits but not as much as in the Wii-U edition.
And most importantly: No Trophies anymore. Why?
Feature wise the game feels incomplete. However matches are still fun which makes the non working online mode even more of a disappointment. I could overlook all the missing features if the online mode, you even pay extra for, would work.
Even if they put stuff back in with DLCs, that was included in the previous games from the start. It leaves a bad taste. That is something I'd expect from Ubisoft or EA, not from the Nintendo I used to love.
...except on 3DS because Smash Run was superior to Smash Tour in every way.
I do miss trophies, and spirits do fill the void a bit. But, they actually have a purpose (plus I'm in the process of getting all of them up to Level 99 now that I have all of them currently). Also, getting them off the board is fun and challenging.
...except for Pyra and Baby Bowser. Seriously, those two can burn in hell! Thank god I was able to buy them.
Also, no, EA would charge you for those modes, at least Nintendo is putting them in as free version updates. Hell, EA would probably charge you to BUY Legend Class spirits.
I know spirits fullfil essentially the same role as rhe trophies, being rewards for completing stuff and the like, but with an actual use but they should have just put that functionality in the trophies instead. The word trophy alone has a much more satisfying definition.
And what i really hate is that Charizard is now tied to Trainer again instead of being it's own independent character, although they promised all the Pokemon are becoming playable as their own too when Ultimate was announced.
Charizard was a nice addition to my main that is Pikachu since Melee.
