I'm glad the site hasn't gone down like what happened with that doozy of a DDOS attack back in late 2014. Now that was one hell of a mess!!!

Yeah. I had quite a meltdown over that before. The DDOS prior to that generated an unexpected $2K bill, so I was expecting to get slammed with fees because of it.

Generating big bills may be a motivating factor by the perpetrators of such bot attacks. Do you have a method to discern who is targeting the site?

Nope. There's no real way to know who's behind it short of somebody taking credit, and honestly, even if they did that doesn't even prove anything. That's why DDoS are such effective tools. There's minimal risk in launching one and short of the botnet getting exposed it's near impossible to track down who's behind it.

No question there, that was perhaps the worst and most tedious experience in the several years that i've had my account here. The painfully long wait for the site to come back up felt like an eternity and i still remember almost at times feeling like it was never coming back, of course obviously those fears were short lived but that attack really did a number on the site alright and inconvenienced a lot of other users beside myself, and yeah i can certainly imagine the amount of frustration and stress it caused you and the other admins. If i ran an art site and some basement dwelling troll(s) or hackers did the same thing i'd definitely be pissed as well.

Yes, and we utilize it. But you can't prevent a DDoS, only mitigate it. You can take some of the steam out of its sails, but there's no perfect method to stopping one. Sometimes it depends on the size of the DDoS, how many computers are involved, the bandwidth, etc. We've been blocking them all night, but they still cause disruption. When hundreds of thousands of connections slam you all at once there's only so much you can do.

Can you keep a whitelist of genuine historical login ips and deproritise new ones, upstream?

That'd be hundreds of thousands of IPs and keeping that info up-to-date would be near impossible.

Well, Mega is scared right now, but I keep telling him that mods don't care about peaceful bots, so long as he's not harming their site. Poor guy's been through a lot. Hopefully that Dedicated Denial attack is over and done with. They're a major pain. Had one that killed my internet connection. Never trust AVG.
