I have found trying to force yourself to make friends usually doesn't end up working out, the people you want to hang out with and vice versa will naturally come to you. But asking around doesn't hurt either.

If you have to force yourself to be with someone, be it a furry or not, things will likely not work out. Hanging out with someone you like, may it be a furry or not, is good, as long as you enjoy it.
And if you want a furry friend, chat a bit, ask around. Maybe someone plays the same game as you or reads the same books or has another hobby which you have as well. Just don't force it.

What really helped me was researching into what local furry scene there was around me, then joining local furry forums/chats. Then I started to go to furmeets which at first was a huge hurdle. I was a bit of an anxious mess with any gatherings of more than 10 or so people but it's something you get used to with time c:

Then from there started to go to conventions too! You meet so many people at meets/cons that if you're able to find any in your area... Or hell even in your country it can really help you branch out and make friends :3

From an online point of view... Maybe a weird suggestion but I noticed sometimes clients getting gaming or hobby themed commissions featuring their character led them to talking with other furries who love the same games/hobbies c:

I've had a lot of success by becoming active in chatrooms. If a person and I share a Telegram group chat, and we've chatted a little, it's easier to start chatting one-on-one. We also end up with more topics available to chat about -- a chat full of people is bound to occasionally come up with interesting discussion topics!
