RIP Syd Mead
I first discovered Syd Mead in an issue of Automobile Quarterly I'd received as part of a birthday gift subscription. I was blown away by these images that seemed to come from another world, yet still managed to feel tangible and believable. It was the first time I'd seen someone do art of the future that really felt like it came from a distant future, and I wanted more of it, even if I had to draw it myself. Judging by the vast number of artists influenced by him work, I clearly wasn't the only one.
Even if you don't know the name, you've probably seen something either created by him, or inspired by him, whether it be Blade Runner, Gundam, or Daft Punk. He defined the look of so many Hollywood scifi films. and between his own work, and that of his admirers in Japan, he pretty much defined the look of anime tech.
In my personal pantheon of art heroes, he's right at the top. He will be missed

Maybe I can still pick up his most recent book at The Pasadena History Museum, or at least at Vroman's bookstore.
Thanks for getting the word out, though.
